BLOOD
2
Four Functions of Blood
  • 1) Carries body oxygen to and removes carbon
    dioxide from all body cells

3
Four Functions of Blood
  • 2) Carries waste products of cell activity to
    kidneys to be removed.

4
Four Functions of Blood
  • 3) Transports nutrients from the digestive
    system to all cells.

5
Four Functions of Blood
  • 4) Carries materials that fight infections and
    heal wounds.

Stem cells are found in your bone marrow and are
considered the mother of all blood cells. If
the body needs more red blood cells, white blood
cells, or platelets, the brain sends a message to
the stem cells to make more.Stem cells are the
regeneration cell.

CIRCULATION THE HEART
Circulatory System by Brainpop
14
There are 3 kinds of circulation in your body
  • 1) Pulmonary Circulation the flow of blood
through heart, lungs, and back to the heart again.

15
There are 3 kinds of circulation in your body
  • 2) Systemic Circulation Moves oxygen-rich blood
to organs and body tissues and back to the heart
    again.

16
There are 3 kinds of circulation in your body
  • 3) Coronary Circulation Describes flow of
    blood to heart tissues.

17
There are 3 types of blood vessels in your body
  • Arteries
  • Move blood away from heart
  • Have thick elastic walls, made of smooth
    muscles.
  • Are connected to ventricles in the heart.

18
There are 3 types of blood vessels in your body
  • Veins
  • Move blood toward the heart
  • Have one-way valves..
  • Are squeezed by skeletal muscles.
  • Carry blood with waste materials and that is
    oxygen-poor.

19
There are 3 types of blood vessels in your body
  • Capillaries
  • Are microscopic blood vessels.
  • Connect arteries to veins.
  • Their walls are only one cell thick!
  • Nutrients and oxygen flow to body cells through
    capillary walls.

What is Blood Pressure?
  • Blood pressure is the
  • amount of pressure your
  • blood is exerting on your
  • blood vessels.
  • It is highest in the
  • arteries, lower in the
  • capillaries, and even less in
  • the veins.

22
What is Blood Pressure?
  • A wave of blood pressure is your pulse.
  • Measure your resting pulse
  • Measure your pulse after exercise
  • A normal resting pulse is 65-80 beats per
    minute.

23
What is Blood Pressure?
  • Blood pressure is always
  • expressed in terms of two
  • numbers, for example 112/60.
  • The first number is a measure
  • of the pressure when
  • ventricles contract.
  • (pushing blood out of the heart)
  • The second numbers is a
  • measure of the pressure
  • when ventricles fill up.

HEART PARTS
28
Humans have 4 chambers
  • 2 Atria and 2 Ventricles
  • Atria Atria
  • Ventricle Ventricle

29
  • The atria contract together
  • and the ventricles contract
  • together.
  • The left and right sides of the
  • heart are divided by a muscular
  • wall called the septum.

30
  • Label the parts of the heart on the diagram!
  • Trace the path of blood through the heart with
    arrows!

  • Which two chambers always hold oxygen-rich
    blood?
  • Left atrium left ventricle
  • Which two chambers always hold oxygen-poor
    blood?
  • Right atrium right ventricle

34
Other Heart Parts to Know
  • Aorta delivers oxygen-rich blood from left
ventricle to the rest of the body
  • Pulmonary artery delivers blood from right
    ventricle to lungs
  • Pulmonary vein delivers blood from lung into
    left atria

35
Vena Cavas
  • Superior vena cava Inferior vena cava
  • Veins (vena) that come from the body and deliver
    blood to the right atria

Respiration
Respiration by Brainpop
40
What is the difference between BREATHING and
RESPIRATION?
  • BREATHING process of inhaling and exhaling Fresh
    air in stale air out

41
What is the difference between BREATHING and
RESPIRATION?
  • RESPIRATION the exchange of gases in cells
using oxygen to break down glucose in cells

Breathing Clip
42
STRUCTURES OF THE RESPIRATORY TRACT
  • Nasal Cavity
  • Moistens and warms air
  • Mucus cilia help trap dust and debris

43
STRUCTURES OF THE RESPIRATORY TRACT
  • Pharynx
  • Tube-like passageway for air and food

44
STRUCTURES OF THE RESPIRATORY TRACT
  • Epiglottis
  • Closes over larynx when you swallow (flap of
    tissue)

45
STRUCTURES OF THE RESPIRATORY TRACT
  • Larynx
  • Airway to which your vocal cords are attached.

  • 12 cm tube with C-shaped rings of cartilage also
    has mucus cilia

47
STRUCTURES OF THE RESPIRATORY TRACT
  • Lungs
  • Spongy, sac-like organs for exchanging O2 and CO2

49
STRUCTURES OF THE RESPIRATORY TRACT
  • Bronchi
  • 2 branches that carry air into lungs

50
STRUCTURES OF THE RESPIRATORY TRACT
  • Bronchioles
  • Smaller branches of the bronchi

51
STRUCTURES OF THE RESPIRATORY TRACT
  • Alveoli
  • Tiny, thin-walled sacs in clusters surrounded
    by capillaries

Asthma by Brainpop
52
STRUCTURES OF THE RESPIRATORY TRACT
  • Diaphragm
  • Muscle separating the chest cavity from the

68
Natural Defenses
  • Feverslows growth of bacteria and speeds up the
    bodys reactions
  • Cilia/mucusfound in nasal passageways/throat
  • Enzymes/Acidsin digestive system
  • SkinPhysical Barrier

69
Specific Defenses
  • Antigens foreign particles
  • in your body.
  • Antibodies made by your body
  • in response to antigens.

70
PASSIVE IMMUNITY
When your body receives antibodies from another
animal. Example mother to baby through nursing
71
ACTIVE IMMUNITY
When your body makes its own antibodies Example
vaccines, actually becoming sick and getting
well again.

Includes lymph nodes, spleen, tonsil, thymus
gland, lymphatic vessels.
79
THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
  • What is it?
  • A system that collects fluids from body tissue
and returns it to the blood.

80
The lymphatic system fights disease and carries
fluid throughout the body.

THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
  • What is lymph?
  • Fluids in body tissues made of water, dissolved
    substances and lymphocytes.

(Lymphocytes a type of white blood cell)
83
THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
  • What are lymph nodes?
  • Bean-shaped structures that filter out
