Mikindani Gazette
Mtwara / Mikindani Council has just
reshuffled most of its Mikindani Street Executive
Officers. Approximately 18 government workers
whose job it is to liaise between the community
and the local government have been transferred to
different locations. Just two of the civil
servants that will be dearly missed are Adam
Sinda Justine Mkwara. Adam (30) and Justine
(26) both came to Mikindani in 2006. Both have
worked tirelessly to improve Mikindani. On behalf
of everyone in Mikindani we thank you.
RIDE TO DAR The distance between Mikindani
and Dar es Salaam is approximately 700 kms. The
lucky ones make the journey by aeroplane. Most
catch a bus or truck, and a few even ride
bicycles. This month several people from
Mikindani pushed their minds and their bodies and
rode between the two cities. Mr Hassan Mnauye and
his companion Mr Bakari Hassan, both of Magengeni
rode their bicycles to Dar es Salaam in order to
attend a 100 year anniversary celebration of the
Ahmadia faith. The journey took the men 5 days to
reach Dar and 3 to return. On their way to Dar
they took the coastal route through villages such
as Shuka Kitunda. On their return they used the
main road. The men reported that the hardest part
of the journey was an extremely sandy section of
road after the Rufiji River. Because of being on
a tight budget the men slept and ate in the
houses of their fellows in faith. Mr Mnauye said
that he was very surprised that their bodies did
not tire during the journey. God, he said,
really helped us. For example every time one of
us got a puncture we were always close to a
puncture repair shop! It was the first time that
the two had ever been to Dar es Salaam. Both
report that the long journey was definitely worth
the effort and was a great experience. Another
group of cyclists made a one-way journey from Dar
to Mikindani. Five volunteers from Mikindani
based NGO EdUKaid, road their bikes from Dar to
Mikindani in order to raise money for their
charity. Mickey Straw, Monty Montagne, Dicky
Moore David Draisey rode their bikes while Tim
Dench (Director) drove behind them in a car
carrying supplies and providing support for his
team. Their journey took 6 days to reach
Mikindani using the main road. Tim described the
journey as a huge mental and physical
challenge. The ride-a-thon raised a total of
5500 pounds in the U.K ( approx 13 million
Tanzanian shillings) which the charity intend to
used to fund their various education based
projects in the Mikindani area.

NEW DISPENSARY OPENS After the event,
Clinical Officer Mr Hassan Wassima described the
new building as being of a good standard
However, he complained that vital equipment was
still not available at the hospital such as an
adequate number of beds, sheets or drip stands.
He also commented, that the number of doctors
present at the hospital needed to be increased
from the three staff currently employed, to six.
The old Mikindani Dispensary is still currently
operating but only treats child patients.
However, in the long run even child patients will
be treated in the new facility and the old
dispensary will be occupied by the Street
Executive Officers of Magengeni and Boma ward.
The National Torch or Mwenge that circulates
continually around the country recently passed
through Mikindani and officially opened the new
Mikindani Dispensary in Magengeni. After the
symbolic ribbon cutting ceremony the lively crowd
that was there to welcome the torch danced and
sang merrily then bounded into the new building
for an inspection.
MITENGO CRAFT VILLAGE On the 9th of August
members from Trade Aid met with government
leaders and local residents of Mitengo to discuss
the idea of constructing a craft village. The
meeting was held on the site of the proposed
craft village, at Mnazi Moja Street, Mitengo. The
meeting started by the Chief Executive of Trade
Aid, Malcolm Wigmore, explaining to the 39 locals
present, what Trade Aid hopes to do on the site.
He then outlined the positive aspects of the
development i.e. jobs would be created and water
and electricity would be connected to the
village. After hearing the proposal the locals of
Mitengo agreed to give Trade Aid permission to go
ahead and negotiate with the local government
about procuring the land. More discussions are
expected however, Land Officer Inyasi Maiba
explained to all present that under no
circumstances could the land be bought by Trade
Aid the land could only be leased. This was
because the proposed sight is within 60 meters of
the ocean, and all water front land within this
distance is government land. While the residents
group agreed at the meeting for the craft village
to go ahead, some individuals expressed their
reservations about the development to the
Gazette. One local said that he did not like
artists painting and carving images of animals
and people because this practice is forbidden in
Islam. Another woman feared that Europeans would
bring their dogs to the village that would bite
and chase people.
