THE FIRST CONFLICT
  • The fight against smugglers began in earnest once
    the revenue cutter fleet was commissioned. The
    new cutters were stationed from NH to GA.

U.S.R.C.S.
  • Was the only maritime force available to the new
    Govt. The Continental Navy was disbanded 1785,
    so between 1790 and 1798 there was no Navy. This
    makes the CG the oldest continuous military
    service.

EMBARGO ACT OF 22 DEC 1807
  • England began impressing U.S. Sailors. No more
    imports or exports allowed. 12 more cutters were
    commissioned.

WAR OF 1812
  • War declared aginst Great Britain. Once again,
    the cutters distinguished themselves.

THE 1ST CAPTURE
  • It was a cutter that captured the first British
    vessel.

RCS SURVEYOR
  • With 15 men, fought 50 men aboard the Brit ship
    NARCISSUS. After the capture of SURVEYOR,
    Captain Travis was returned to the U.S. by the
    Brit Commander for his gallantry.

RCS EAGLE
  • Was driven ashore near Negros Head, NY in an
    encounter with the Brit DISPATCH, dragged her
    guns up a bluff continued the battle. They
    used the ships log paper for wad, and picked up
    the shot from the DISPATCH and shot back.

1812AGAINST ENGLAND.

31 MARCH 1819
  • RCS ALABAMA LOUISIANA captured Mexican
    privateer Bravo in the Gulf of Mexico, and
    destroyed a notorious pirates den, putting an
    end to organized piracy on the Gulf.

  • 8 cutters supported Army Navy ops. They
    attacked war parties, broke up rendezvous points,
    transported troops.

  • 5 Cutters were engaged in amphibious ops, and
    served on blockade duty.

PARAGUAY IN 1855
  • The cutter HARRIET LANE was ordered to join a
    Navy squadron to settle a dispute with Paraguay.
    She was the only shallow-draft steamer amoung 18
    ships. She was the most active warship in the
    squadron.

CONFEDERATE CUTTERS
  • Many cutter men joined the Confederacy.
    Confederate cutters, including the ROBERT
    MCLELLAND, were principally used as commerce
    raiders.

NOTABLE INDIVIDUAL ACTIONS
  • The 1st naval shot of the Civil War was fired by
    the cutter HARRIET LANE when it challenged
    NASHVILLE while attempting to smuggle supplies to
    the Conferates.

The HARRIET LANE also took part in the capture of
Hatteras Inlet.The HERCULES balled Confederates
on the Rappahannock River, Va.
