Underground Survivors
  • Any plant or animal that lives through a disaster
    is a survivor
  • Land and mud in water protected some animals ex.
    Chipmunks and frogs
  • Some plants grew after the disaster, like
fireweed, which attracted animals back to the
    area.

4
Distant Colonizers
  • All living things that come to an area to eat and
    live are called colonizers
  • How colonizers helped revive Mt. St. Helens
  • Deer and elk came to eat the fireweed
  • they left hoof prints in the ground and droppings
    with seeds in it

How colonizers helped revive Mt. St. Helens.
continued
  • the seeds sprouted into plants
  • the plants attracted more animals, insects,
    spiders, and birds
  • bacteria rotted the dead trees which enriched the
    soil
  • this allowed bigger shrubs and trees to grow so
    animals returned
