Title: Cheating and Plagiarism

1
Cheating and Plagiarism
  • Richland High Study Group
  • 2002-2003

2
The Problem
  • Data shows that cheating is becoming more common.
  • The resources available on the Internet makes it
easier to cheat than in the past.
  • Cheating gets in the way of real learning.

3
According to the Merriam-Webster OnLine
Dictionary, to cheat means
  • 1 a to practice fraud or trickery
  • b to violate rules dishonestly (as at cards or
    on an examination)

4
According to the Merriam-Webster OnLine
Dictionary, to plagiarize means
  • to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of
    another) as one's own
  • to use (another's production) without crediting
    the source
  • to commit literary theft
  • to present as new and original an idea or product
    derived from an existing source.

5
Our Vision
  • In order to create a climate of integrity and to
foster the value of learning, RHS teachers,
students, and parents will understand the defined
consequences of cheating and plagiarism as
established in the RHS academic integrity policy
that will be implemented and enforced for the
    entire student body.

6
Possible Solutions
  • Teach students what constitutes cheating.
  • Establish clear guidelines
  • Enforce these guidelines consistently

7
RHS Academic Integrity Policy
  • To be determined!
