- 1998 Initial funding for Argo
- 2000 Samoa Agreement w/SOPAC for Argo
deployment in Pacific Island EEZ
- 2002 Fiji Workshop Applications of Ocean
Observations for Pacific Islands
- 2004 1,041 floats now operating
- 2006 Completion of 3,000-float array
4Status of Argo on 5 Feb 2004
1041 operating floats
5Comments on Argo
- Full and open data policy with no exclusive use
- Real-time data going onto GTS within 26 hours
- Data going into two mirrored Global Data Centers
French Coriolis and U.S. GODAE Server
- At present rate of funding (20M/yr), global
array will be completed by 2006
- Near-term Challenge Learning to function in a
production-line mode
- Longer-term Sustain funding long enough to
complete global array and demonstrate its value
6 Agreement for Argo Deployment in the Central
Western Pacific
Float-Providing Countries Will Provide advanc
e notice of plans for float deployment within the
collective EEZ of the Pacific Islands.
Pacific Island Nations Will Concur with those
plans for deployment. Float-Providing Countrie
s Will Provide assistance identifying and linki
ng with operational forecast centers which will
generate forecasts using Argo data.
7Workshop on Potential Applications of Ocean
Observations for the Pacific Islands
Review potential applications of all ocean
observations that can benefit the Pacific
Islands. Identify data product requirements ne
eded for each application assess extent to
which they are being met. In case of needed im
provements, establish linkages between those who
will develop them, routinely create them, an
d use them.
8Pacific Islands Regional Ocean Information
System Purpose
- To establish and maintain a system that will
- Provide timely, accessible, and appropriate ocean
data, products and services to regional and local
users, and
- Build national capacity and technical skills to
effectively address sustainable development
issues relating to
- the environment,
- resources management and conservation,
- coastal management and
- public use.

System Current Status
- PI-GOOS Coordinator
- NOAA, Bureau of Meteorology, and IOC/Perth
- have committed to support 1st year salary, and
- Recruitment action is underway.
- First year work plan is under development
- Inventory available observations, products and
service providers,
- Match these with user needs,
- Identify some actions that can lead to quick
victories, and
- In so doing, establish PI-GOOS.
