Title: This is important in exploring our options in Space. ... Ra
1Thermal Protection Systems
2 The technologies developed will be used to provi
de a more efficient way to travel to space. This
is important in exploring our options in Space.
Spacecraft can become less expensive to operate
and can re-launch much faster than the Space
Shuttle.

4 The covering on the spacecraft that can withst
and the heat of re-entry and keep that heat from
reaching the inside of the spacecraft.
5- It can absorb and hold the heat so that it
doesnt pass into the vehicle.
- It can send the heat back into space.
6- Designers try to keep all the parts of the
vehicle, including the TPS, as light as possible
so that more of the allowed weight can be used
for passengers and payload.

8 Heavy Ablative Material that absorbs heat then
vaporizes a little at a time taking heat with
it.
This type of TPS is disposable.
9- Made of 24,300 silica fiber tiles that cover the
outside of the orbiter. These tiles dissipate
heat so quickly that you can touch them even when
the center of the tile is still glowing red with
heat. - These tiles are reusable unless they are damaged
in flight.
10- Has a thermal protectionHas system that serves as
protection and a shell. It is made up of 1,200
panels of an alloy called Inconel.
- These panels are more durable and lighter than
the Shuttles tiles and have to be replaced less
often.
11- Conduction- Motion of heat through solid
substances by direct contact.
-
- Materials that allow this process to happen
easily are conductors and those that prevent it
from happening easily are insulators.
12- Convection- The motion of heat through a liquid
or gas because of the motion of particles.
- Example Heat rising off the hood of a car in
the Summer.
- How does this relate to space travel?
13- Radiation- The motion of energy through empty
space as electromagnetic waves.
- Examples of these include light, heat, and
X-rays.
- Why is this important to know for space travel?
