Permissions, or God Bless Unix
  • What are permissions?
  • Permissions are just that. Permission to
read/write/execute a file. Some have it, some
    dont
  • Um Why?
  • Because OS X is based on Unix. Unix is a
multi-user operating system, it is designed to
have multiple users logged into the system at the
same time. Permissions make it easy to keep each
persons files personal and keep track of files
based on who is allowed to use them.

4
Permissions, or God Bless Unix
  • Why does this affect me?
  • You dont have permissions to the whole
computer, even if its yours. This is how Apple
prevents you from messing with files you
shouldnt mess with, and also how your
staff/children keep you out of their personal
files. Needless to say, this is an area that can
    be very confusing.

5
Permissions, or God Bless Unix
  • Types of permissions
  • Read allows you to read the contents of a file
    or folder
  • Write allows you to write to a file or folder
  • Execute allows you to run a program/file/script
  • Ownership allows you to change all of the above
  • You can view/change a files permissions by
highlighting the file (or folder) and pressing
Commandi or if you prefer, the Apple key and
the i key at the same time.
