Why do we want to be rich?
  • And Jesus said to His disciples, "Truly I say to
you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the
kingdom of heaven. Again I say to you, it is
easier for a camel to go through the eye of a
needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom
    of God. (Matt. 1923-24)

6
Gods Warning
  • Luke 1313 No servant can serve two masters for
either he will hate the one, and love the other
or else he will hold to the one, and despise the
other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon (riches).
  • 1Ti 617 Charge them that are rich in this
world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in
uncertain riches, but in the living God, who
giveth us richly all things to enjoy

7
Serving Money
  • U.S. workers put in the longest hours in the
    industrialized world
  • We spend nearly one week more on the job than
    they did a decade ago
  • The typical American worked 36 more hours in 2000
    than in 1990
  • Germans reportedly work an average of 499 fewer
    hours every year
  • British workers get 260 more free hours each year

Trusting in Money?
  • Where is your trust?
  • Savings account
  • 401K or pension
  • Life insurance
  • Homeowners insurance
  • Social Security

9
Gods Warning for Those Who Trust in Money
  • But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy
soul shall be required of thee then whose shall
those things be, which thou hast provided? So is
he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is
    not rich toward God.

10
Fleeting Nature of Riches
  • Matt. 619-21 Lay not up for yourselves treasures
upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and
where thieves break through and steal But lay
up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where
neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where
thieves do not break through nor steal for where
your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

11
Gods Warning For Those Who Love Money
  • 1Tim. 610 For the love of money is the root
of all evil which while some coveted after, they
have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves
    through with many sorrows.

12
Gods Warning
  • Luke 1215-19 And he said unto them, Take heed,
and beware of covetousness for a mans life
consisteth not in the abundance of the things
which he possesseth. And he spake a parable unto
them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man
brought forth plentifully And he thought within
himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have
no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said,
This will I do I will pull down my barns, and
build greater and there will I bestow all my
fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul,
Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many
years take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

13
How do you spend Gods money?
14
Consumerism Gone Wild
  • US Savings
  • The savings rate in 1980 was 10
  • The savings rate in 2000 was 2
  • The savings rate now is apparently 0.0
  • The average American family has credit card debt
    of 9,000

Gods Warning For the Monetarily Worried
  • And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say
unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye
shall eat neither for the body, what ye shall
put on. The life is more than meat, and the body
is more than raiment. Consider the ravens for
they neither sow nor reap which neither have
storehouse nor barn and God feedeth them how
much more are ye better than the fowls? And which
of you with taking thought can add to his stature
one cubit? If ye then be not able to do that
thing which is least, why take ye thought for the
    rest?

16
Gods Warning For the Monetarily Worried
  • Consider the lilies how they grow they toil not,
they spin not and yet I say unto you, that
Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one
of these. If then God so clothe the grass, which
is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast
into the oven how much more will he clothe you,
O ye of little faith? And seek not ye what ye
shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye
of doubtful mind. For all these things do the
nations of the world seek after and your Father
knoweth that ye have need of these things. But
rather seek ye the kingdom of God and all these
things shall be added unto you.

17
Needs vs. Wants
  • If we are hungry, we want food
  • If we have eaten one meal, we want to know where
the next one is coming from
  • If have plenty of food, we want it to taste good
  • If we have plenty of food, we want a nice ambiance

Respecter of Persons

The Last Days Money
  • But realize this, that in the last days difficult
times will come. For men will be lovers of self,
lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers,
    disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,
    unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips,
without self-control, brutal, haters of good,
    treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of
pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a
form of godliness, although they have denied its
power Avoid such men as these. (2 Tim. 31-5)

20
Choose you this day whom ye will serve? Ye cannot
serve God and mammon.
21
  • Religion, of course, does bring large profits,
but only to those who are content with what they
have. We brought nothing into the world, and we
can take nothing out of it but as long as we
have food and clothing, we shall be content with
that. People who long to be rich are a prey to
trial they get trapped into all sorts of foolish
and harmful ambitions which plunge people into
ruin and destruction... Instruct those who are
rich in this world's goods that they should not
be proud and should set their hopes not on money,
which is untrustworthy, but on God who gives us
richly all that we need for our happiness. They
are to do good and be rich in good works,
generous in giving and always ready to share,
this is the way they can amass a good capital sum
for the future if they want to possess the only
life that is real." (1 Tim. 66-9, 17-19 NJB)

22
Exhortation
  • God warns us concerning wealth (loving money,
trusting in money, covetousness, greed, etc.)
  • Our society does not have a healthy or correct
    understanding of wealth.
  • Wealth does not bring happiness.
  • We are ALL rich.
  • We trade our life for .
  • We have an amazing opportunity.
  • Be careful how we use GODS resources.
