What Where The Black Codes?
  • The black codes where basically laws that only
applied to blacks. There were many different
subjects that the codes dealt with like property
or marriage just like do today. In Mississippi
the codes prevented blacks from buying or renting
farmland and required them to sign a yearly labor
contract with a white employer. The codes also
allowed the state to send black children to work
for white employers if their parents couldnt
support them. Excerpt from the book Into The
    land of freedom.

3
Why And When Were Black Codes Created?
  • The codes were created during the reconstruction
era between 1865 and 1877. The codes were created
because whites couldnt accept that blacks were
now free and because it was like the blacks
werent completely free with these codes or laws.
