Recently, the Tobacco Industry was forced to
reveal information about how and why they target
young people in their ads. It was learned that
the Tobacco Industry wants to recruit what they
call replacement smokers 5,000 new young
smokers every day to replace the 5,000 older
smokers who quit or die of smoking-related
illnesses each day.
3
A Short History
  • 1881 Mass marketing of cigarettes began with the
    first cigarette making machine.
  • 1955 With improvement of these machines, it took
only 2.75 lbs of tobacco to make 1,000
    cigarettes.
  • 1985 Took only 1.75 lbs to do the same.
  • 1980s 90 of all cigarettes are filtered.

4
Americans puff 10 Billion Cigarettes a Week
Enough to Reach the Moon and Back 500,000 Miles
5
The Tobacco Industry repeatedly told the public
that nicotine is not an addictive drug. They
called it a flavoring agent. However, they
knew once a person started they were hooked.
6
During WWII a pack of cigarettes could be found
in the soldiers sea rations. Some tobacco
companies sent boatloads of cigarettes overseas
for The Troops. Many soldiers who never
smoked, came home addicted to nicotine.
7
Racks of cigarettes would be placed low to the
ground and by exit doors making them easy for
children to steal.
8
Today, the annual advertising budget for a
tobacco company is close to 2 Billion
9
Some advertising is going on right under our
noses and we dont even realize it.

recruit children?

13
Not only do they recruit youth, a large part of
the 2 billion spent on advertising goes to study
what attracts different cultures and groups.
