What is the Berlin Wall?

• The Berlin wall was a key point to the cold war.
  It was raised in 1961 down the middle of Berlin.
  It divided Berlin into two, East and West. The
  wall was originally raised to prevent people from
  defecting.

East and West Berlin

• East and West Berlin were like two separate
  countries, West Berlin was controlled by the U.S,
  the U.K and France. East Berlin was controlled by
  the U.S.S.R. East and West Berlin had separate
  currency, government and police forces, they were
  like completely different countries.

The rest of Germany

• The rest of Germany was split into East and
  West ( the East controlled by the U.S.S.R and the
  West was controlled by the U.S, the U.K and
  France) Berlin however was located in the middle
  of East Germany so West Berlin was completely
  surrounded by the U.S.S.R. This made it extremely
  hard for West Berlin to Communicate with their
  home countries.

How were Supplies received?

• With West Berlin completely surrounded they
  desperately needed supplies from their home
  countries such as coal and flour. In order to get
  these, home countries had to fly over enemy
  territory, over 80 planes flew each day. This was
  known as the Berlin Airlift.

The end of Berlin wall

• The Berlin wall finally came down on November
  9th 1989, this day was celebrated all over the
  world and brought an end to the division of Berlin
