• Planning Assumptions
• Severity appears to be the same as the seasonal
  flu most people experience mild symptoms and
  recover quickly
• Concern because it appears to preferentially
  infect younger people
• Unlikely schools (K-12) will be asked to close

• Expect business/academic disruptions that can be
  managed with available resources
• Seasonal vaccine is available nowH1N1 vaccine
  will be available beginning in late October
• Available to open a POD (points of dispensing)
  site if asked

• Based on what I know, this event will be
  disruptive and inconvenient for the campus
  departments, but will not be overwhelming for
  available resources. There is the possibility
  this virus will become more problematic, and this
  possibility should be taken into consideration.

• There is serious illness and death from the
  seasonal flu every year this year will be no
  exception. Because this is a new virus, more
  people will be ill and there will be more deaths.
  It does not appear the ratios will be higher than
  in the normal flu season, but again, that
  possibility should be taken into consideration.

• Because of the nature of this new influenza
  virus, the media interest and coverage will
  highlight those illnesses and deaths on campus
  and in the community. We can expect uneasiness
  and concern from our staff, faculty, students,
  parents. We can expect rumors to spread quickly.
  Therefore, early and on-going communication to
  answer questions about our response and available
  resources is critical.
