• In memory of Saint Valentine, we celebrate
  Valentines Day every year on February 14th.
• On this day, people from all over the world give
  cards, candy, and flowers to show people that
  they love them and care for them.
• But who is Saint Valentine and why do we
  celebrate this holiday?

History of Valentines Day

• Around 269 AD, Emperor Claudius II stopped all
  marriages and engagements in Rome.
• He stopped the marriages because he was having a
  hard time having men sign up for his Army.
  Emperor Claudius II thought that this was because
  the men did not want to leave their families and
  loved ones back home.

History of Valentines Day Continued

• A priest named Saint Valentine lived in Rome and
  thought that this was wrong, so he helped perform
  marriages in secret.
• When Emperor Cladius II found out about the
  secret marriages, he had Saint Valentine thrown
  in jail while Valentine waited to be killed.
• While in jail, Saint Valentine fell in love with
  the jailors daughter.
• Before he was killed he sent her a love letter
  that was signed Your Valentine.
