General Characteristics of a Successful Research
Proposal

• Topic must be focused on something the USDA is
  interested in.
• Know and follow the guidelines of the program.
• Make sure the proposal ends up in the correct
  panel.
• If you have questions, e-mail a National Program
  Director.
• Write the proposal in advance so you can
  carefully proof-read it.
• Ask colleagues to read the proposal.
• KISS (keep it simple straightforward)
• Be willing to serve on panels (even if you do not
  think you have time).
