Necessity to Art Form
Quilts were a necessity in households of the
past. They were used for bed coverings, as well
as curtains, petticoats and waistcoats to keep
the body warm.
Patchwork quilting began as a result of the lack
of plentiful materials. Women saved and
used every scrap. Quilts were intended for
everyday use. When the quilts became too worn to
use, they became the fillers for new quilts.
Did you know? The oldest quilted object
was found in a Siberian tomb, dating around the
first century B.C.
3
Necessity to Art Form
Over the years, the practical need for quilts
has diminished. However, quilting has become a
popular form of creative art.
Quilts are considered a continuing strain of
history, wearable art and a vehicle to express
yourself.
Contemporary quilts link the past to the present
and lead on into the future.

Quilt Block Designs
The idea for this block may have come to the
woman of the house as she milked the cows and
churned the butter.
Churn Dash
Indians hunting deer with bows and arrows
inspired this quilt block design.
Does and Darts

Quilt Block Designs, contd
This quilt may have gotten its name from a weary
traveler who was glad to be sleeping under a
roof instead of under the stars.
Variable Star
This quilt is a dedication to the early pioneers.
The narrow strips of material resemble the logs
pioneers used when building their homes.
