Introduction
  • The IAMSLIC Z39.50 Distributed Library
    facilitates international resource sharing among
    aquatic and marine science libraries and
    information centers.
  • In this presentation, users will gain information
    on how to request materials from IAMSLIC members.

Requests for photocopies (non-returnables)
  • Requesting is limited to IAMSLIC members only.
  • Check for membership, see
  • http//www.iamslic.org/members/member_dir.html
  • Search the Z Catalogue
  • All records within the catalog including
    monographs and serials (print and/or electronic).
  • Retrieves serials holdings from the Union List of
    Marine Aquatic Serials (displayed first).

Requests for non-returnables
  • From the list of returned records, select the
    correct item record and best holding location.
  • Links to local holdings appear in records for
    journals or other serials that contain an ISSN
    field.
  • For some locations that are part of larger
    institutions with multiple locations listed in
    one combined union catalog, check the detailed
    holdings to verify which location owns a desired
    title.

  • When selecting a holding location, note that some
    lenders are lenders of last resort and not to
    be queried until all other locations have been
    exhausted.
  • Vary your selection of holding locations to
    spread the burden of lending. Do not always
    select the same location!

  • Click Submit Borrowing Request.
  • Enter the IAMSLIC user ID.
  • Enter the IAMSLIC password.
  • Click Submit ID and Password.
  • When IAMSLIC membership is confirmed, click
    Continue.

  • Confirm the TITLE/AUTHOR information matches your
    request.
  • Note the holding locations lending policies. Do
    not proceed if you cannot comply with these
    policies.
  • Indicate that this is a Copy request.
  • Click CONTINUE Borrow from this Library.

  • Provide a complete citation for the item
    (article, book chapter, etc.)
  • Select your library from the list of members.
  • Click CONTINUE Verify your Library
    Information.

  • Indicate which methods of delivery you accept.
  • Enter a local note, if desired.
  • Click CONTINUE Finalize Request.
  • Click FINISH Send Request.

  • Request goes to holding location via email a
    copy of the request goes to your email.
  • Holding location responds directly via email if
    the request can or cannot be filled.
  • Material is sent directly to requesting library.

  • From the list of returned records, select the

  • In some institutions, the online catalog is a
    union catalog of many different branch libraries
    within the institution. When you search these
    combined catalogs through the Z Catalogue, the
    local holdings information about which branch
    owns a particular item is not always available.

  • Use only after searches of the Z Catalogue have
    failed to find the desired item, or when holding
    locations within the Z Catalogue are unable to
    fill the request.

  • Subject line reads
  • ILL (Title)

Requests to the IAMSLIC Discussion List
  • Provide as much information about the item as
    possible.
  • Limit each email to a request for one item only
  • for multiple items send multiple emails!
  • Send a follow-up email to the list when the item
    has been filled.
