Title: Justin Greenhalgh - RAL

1
Summary and conclusions
  • Justin Greenhalgh
  • Dave Cockerill

2
Overview
  • The issues
  • The areas presented
  • Open issues
  • What we have aimed to show
  • Our objectives

3
The issues
  • Formal brief
  • 1. endorse the main mechanics of the EE,
  • 2. endorse the proposals for Dee assembly and the
    installation scheme,
  • 3. endorse the definition of the services and
cooling pipes external to EE taking into account
the evolution of the VFE electronics.
  • Related areas
  • Is the design of the major mechanical components
    sound?
  • If we freeze the design of the major mechanics
now, what are the implications for further work
    on the electronics?
  • Why do we need to start manufacture of the large
    components now?

4
The areas presented
  • Major mechanics
  • Structural and thermal analysis
  • Tests
  • Assembly of Dees
  • Services
  • Integration
  • QA issues
  • Timescales
  • Formal response to EDR-04

5
Open issues
  • Cooling pipe type (extrusion/braze, etc)
  • Choice will be influenced by capabilities of
    selected supplier
  • Precise locations of support holes for components
    behind backplate
  • Choice is rather constrained by geometry,
    interacts with mechatronics
  • Exact location of patch panel fixing holes
  • Could be added after manufacture
  • Finalisation of material for ring flange and
    backplate
  • May be negotiated with supplier for best price
  • Location of tapped holes in Positional spacers to
    mount to manipulator
  • Must be fixed before m/f, studies on manipulator
    in hand
  • SE interfaces spider fixing hole details and
    services fixings
  • Discussions in hand with Piet Wertelaers

6
We have aimed to show
  • That the mechanical design is sound and fully
    supported by relevant calculations
  • That the assembly and integration schemes are
    feasible
  • That the services are manageable and the other
interfaces are well defined and respected
  • That we must freeze the design now and proceed to
tender in order to meet the CMS timescales
  • That to freeze the design of the major mechanics
will not have a major impact on the work
currently in hand to design the mechatronics

7
Our objectives
  • We seek from the reviewers
  • Endorsement of the points made on the previous
    slide
  • Commentary upon the design and any suggestions
