Who Moved My Cheese?, by Spencer Johnson, M.D?
    (1998)

12
Characters who move their own cheese?
13
  • Lets try out another possibility
  • Take a few minutes to think about a high-point
experience in your past or current professional
life when you were exceptionally happy (i.e., you
felt really good about the positive impact you
were having on students or on the college)
  • What were you doing? Who was involved? What were
the factors, the forces, the conditions that
supported your moments of exceptional happiness?
  • A variation on Appreciative Process by G.
    Bushe, 2001, Clear Leadership

14
  • Now, pair up with someone you dont know, or
    dont know well
  • Take turns sharing your stories about those
    exceptional moments

15
  • You can learn how to create more cheese, i.e.,
more happiness in your professional life

16
Meet Track and Fan!
  • 1. Be clear about what you want to create MORE of
    (not less of)
  • In this case, you want to create MORE happiness
    in your professional life
  • 2. Track it
  • Notice when you are happy
  • Also, notice the conditions, the forces, the
    factors that support your happiness

17
  • 3. Fan your happiness
  • Praise yourself for creating it
  • Bless it - give license to yourself to continue
    creating it
  • Ask yourself to create even MORE of it
  • 4. Get others to Track and Fan your happiness,
i.e., notice and acknowledge your exceptional
    moments of happiness

18
When you create your own cheese, no one else can
move it!
19
Change the way you think about change
  • Old way some external force or agency or person
moves the colleges cheese and the college
    reacts or responds
  • Negatively
  • Positively
  • New way the college, as a whole system (board,
    CEO, administrators, classified staff and
    students), collaboratively creates the positive
changes that matter most AND that the college
    community most wants

20
Create MORE of your own cheese!
  • As a trustee and as a board, what is one thing
you can do to help the whole college
collaboratively create the changes that matter
most AND that the college community most wants?

21
On an index card
  • What was the most important thing you learned
    today?
  • How will you apply it? That is, how will you
    change your DNA?
  • Decide what you want to do more of
  • Notice each little instance of its presence
  • Acknowledge and celebrate each time you notice it
