Early Life

• Born on October 1, 1924 in Plains Georgia
• Grew up on a peanut farm
• The eldest of four children
• As a child he showed a deep commitment to
  Christianity
• In 1970 he was elected Senator of Georgia.

Presidential Term

• Served as President from 1977-1981
• Aspired to make government competent and
  compassionate
• One of Carters Most important accomplishments as
  President were the Camp David Accords.
• Carter worked tirelessly on SALT II Treaty
  (SALTStrategic Arms Limitations Talks)

Domestic Policies

• Made major reforms to the Department of Health,
  Education and Welfare.
• Pardoned Vietnam-era Draft Dodgers
• Raised Social Security
• Appointed record numbers of women and minorities
  to government and judiciary positions.
• Enacted strong legislation for Environmental
  Protection.

Camp David Accords

• In 1978, Carter negotiated peace talks between
  Israel and Egypt.
• These ground breaking talks promised peace
  between Israel and Egypt peace which had not
  existed since 1948.
• The high point of Carters administration.

The Carter Center

• A non-profit organization founded by Carter in
  1982.
• Guided by five basic principles
• 1. The Center emphasizes action and results.
• 2. The Center does not duplicate the effective
  efforts of others.
• 3. The Center addresses difficult problems and
  recognizes the possibility of failure as an
  acceptable risk.
• 4. The Center is nonpartisan and acts as a
  neutral in dispute resolution activities.
• 5. The Center believes that people can improve
  their lives when provided with the necessary
  skills, knowledge, and access to resources.

Humanity and Diplomacy

• International non-profit organization founded in
  1976 to provide simple affordable housing.
• Made important diplomatic meetings in North
  Korea, Cuba and Guantanamo Bay.
• Awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for, decades
  of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to
  international conflicts, to advance democracy and
  human rights, and to promote economic and social
  development"
