WP1 Objectives (as in TA)
  • Delivering a detailed database of available dark
fibre in SE European countries as well as the
    necessary information to identify interconnection
requirements based on exchange points with the
    rest of Europe
  • Help in identifying the most feasible
cross-border connections based on (dark) fibre
and determining which ones should be established
    for seamless interconnection
  • Assessing and describing, by means of selected
case studies, the status of (NREN) owned national
    connectivity in SE Europe
  • Producing an initial view on the steps needed to
transform (parts of) the SEE NREN infrastructure
    to owned or leased fibres.
  • Providing input to the reports of WP3 concerning
the feasibility and penetration possibilities of
dark fibre deployment in SEE NRENs in view of the
possibility of a regional infrastructure to
become integrated with the pan-European network
    infrastructure for research and education
    (GÉANT2).

3
WP1 Objectives (to work on)
  • Deliver a database of available (dark) fibre (and
planting projects) in SEE that will assist
SEE-NRENs in their National and International
    fibre acquisition roadmaps
  • Identify (dark) fibre interconnection points and
cross-border connections in SEE (and determine
which ones should be established for seamless
interconnection) that will assist SEE-NRENs in
    National and International interconnectivity
    plans
  • Produce a report on the status of SEE NRENs that
will assist SEE NRENs in benchmarking their
progress and update their sustainability plans
  • Describe and assess the status of (all) SEE NRENs
    owned national connectivity and related
acquisition projects that will accelerate (via
best practices) SEE NRENs fibre acquisition plans

4
WP1 Tasks (Leaders)
  • Task 1.1 Deliver the SEE (dark) fibre footprint
    database
  • GRNET/Jorge
  • Task 1.2 Report SEE NRENs (dark) fibre
    acquisition experiences
  • GRNET/Nikos

5
WP1 Timeline - Milestones
update
6
WP1 Deliverables (Editors)
  • D1.1 - SEE (dark) fibre footprint database
  • M05 (GRNET/Jorge)
  • D1.2 - SEE NRENs (dark) fibre acquisition
    experiences
  • M06 (GRNET/Nikos)

WP1 Effort
8
WP1 Approach T1.1
9
T1.1 discussions/decisions
  • Dark Fibre Footprint Template/Data base records
fields Need to agree on the data that we will be
    recording (template) in the database.
  • ALL partners, but specially WP2, WP3 and WP4
leaders and DANTE, CESNET, NIIFI, AMREJ, MARNET,
DANTE, ANTELOPE, to provide the data they
    consider significant for recording.
  • Copy the related text from Annex 1 fibre type
    and vendor, capacities, transmission reliability,
expiration date (term of reservation), ownership
of the dark fibre, exact end-to-end fibre length,
    installed in-line equipment, measured
    attenuation, value of chromatic dispersion,
    route, maintenance arrangements.
  • The data should be categorized and should be easy
    to be included in excel.
  • To agree on the data 15/4/2005
  • Request of Information
  • Should be attractive to recipients (a business
    behind it)
  • List of recipients of the RFI. To be produced
    with
  • the internal intelligence of all SEE NRENs
  • information available at TERENA, DANTE and
  • government agencies
  • equipment and fibre vendors
  • fibre maintenance companies
  • public sites and reports
  • To finalize the list by 22/4/2005.
  • To send the RFi by 29/4/2005.

10
T1.1 discussions/decisions
  • Market research reports Plan to acquire a couple
of market research reports from companies
specialised in providing market intelligence on
optical networking (availability of fibre) in
    SEE.
  • Jorge to search around and propose buying one or
two (total budget 10k) (e.g. KMI,
    telegeographics)
  • Local visits Plan to organize local visits to
the targeted countries to meet with known owners
of fibre or to identify others
  • visits to be combined with other activities in
    the project (e.g. WP3)
  • To be organized around June-July with Claire and
    the local hosts
  • Input from finished or running projects the only
relevant input seems to be from GN2/DANTE
  • Jorge to sign ASAP NDA with GN2/DANTE
  • How to handle the information (sensitivity)
  • Jorge to be the central point of the process
(signing also the NDAs wherever required)
  • All data to be shared also with Valentino/TERENA
    and Dai/DANTE under NDA
  • A countrys data and international cross borders
to be shared with one person in that countrys
    NREN
  • An article to be included in the consortium
agreement to cover the consortium organizations.
  • Area covered
  • Countries Albania, FYR of Macedonia, Bulgaria,
    Romania, Serbia-Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina
  • Cross-borders above and with Greece, Italy,
    Croatia,Hungary

11
WP1 Approach T1.2
12
T1.2 discussions/decisions
  • Section A of Deliverable 1.2 - Status of SEE
    NRENs (status indicators)
  • Plan to update the related sections of similar
SEEREN and SEEGRID deliverables (without sending
out new questionnaires). Start working on the
update of the related sections of the
abovementioned deliverables. CESNET will not be
    included.
  • All confirm filled in the TERENA compendium 2005
    (http//www.terena.nl/compendium/)
  • Section B of Deliverable 1.2 Dark fiber
    acquisition experiences/examples (case studies)
of DF deployment in SEE NRENs and other world
    regions.
  • No separation between SEE and other regions
  • Known cases in Serbia-Montenegro, FYR of
    Macedonia, Greece, Hungary,
  • To include also Czech Rep, Slovenia, Croatia,
    Poland
  • No cases in Albania, Bulgaria, Romania,
    Bosnia-Herzegovina
  • All above countries/NRENs to provide provide a
    report/description.
  • Jorge to circulate a template
  • WP1 will provide only a first level analysis of
the collected data related to fiber availability
    and dark fiber acquisitions
