Title: Facilities at Laurentian University

1
Facilities at Laurentian University
  • Jacques Farine
  • SNOLAB Workshop III
    Sudbury 12 may 2004

2
Rationale
  • To support the underground experiments, proper
laboratory and working space on the surface is
    necessary
  • preparation of the resins and adsorbers that are
used in the trace radioactive assays
  • chemical separation of the radioactive atoms
  • radioactivity counting facilities
  • mix of laboratory space, clean assembly space, a
workshop, computer rooms, and general office space

3
Creighton mine is 20 km from Sudbury and
Laurentian University
  • independent research facilities are necessary at
the site, with space required for counter
    development, assembly and testing
  • surface laboratory will require a
    low-radioactivity chemistry laboratory with fume
hoods for solvents and acids, sinks with regular
and ultra-pure water, and provision for chemical
    waste collection
  • Policy that no radiotracer studies involving
liquid radioisotope sources are to be carried out
at the SNO surface / U/G labs to prevent
    contamination

4
Creighton mine is 20 km from Sudbury and
Laurentian University (II)
  • ongoing radiotracer testing program at LU
  • support of SNO's radioassay program
  • carried out by SNO staff and visiting scientists
  • this program will persist/grow with more
    low-background experiments on site
  • migration of radioisotopes in fluids
  • most current proposals/prototypes based on fluids
  • purification of cryofluids may require more
    investigation
  • counter development / staging area
  • SNO, SK same counters used for Ra/Rn assay
    program as for program development
  • can probably no longer be the case for next
    generation techniques
  • hence this area needs to be isolated from site

5
Current Facilities Off-site
  • One-Ton Test Facility (Carleton, Ottawa) - far
  • Chemistry Lab (Laurentian, Sudbury) - small

Status
  • 2/3 of desired space identified (1000 sq ft)
  • detail design in progress w/ Physical Plant
  • transformation during summer 2004
  • facility available for equipment in fall 2004
  • actively looking for more space for counter
    development
  • start to define needs from various experiments
