Horse Scaffolding
  • Horse Scaffolding is a scaffold for light or
    medium duty work.
  • It is scaffolding made up of "saw horses," which
    support a work platform.
  • Horse Scaffolding is mainly used during Ship
    Construction and maintenance.
  • Since new methods of ship construction have come
    about, it has greatly reduced the use of these
    scaffolds.

OSHA Regulations
  • 1915.71(g)(1) The minimum dimensions of lumber
    used in the construction of horses shall be in
    accordance with Table E-3 in 1915.118.
  • 1915.71(g)(2) Horses constructed of materials
    other than lumber shall provide the strength,
    rigidity and security required of horses
    constructed of lumber.

  • 1915.71(g)(3) The lateral spread of the legs
    shall be equal to not less than one-third of the
    height of the horse.
  • 1915.71(g)(4) All horses shall be kept in good
    repair, and shall be properly secured when used
    in staging or in locations where they may be
    insecure.

    accordance with the requirements of paragraph (i)
    of this section.

Procedures and Policies
  • Scaffolds can not be more than 10 feet or two
    tiers in height, whichever of the two is less.
  • When horses are made up in tiers each horse must
    be placed directly over the other horse in the
    tier below.
  • The legs of each horse must be nailed down or
    otherwise secured to prevent displacement and
    each tier must be crossbraced.

    none.
