Executive Analysis

• Gov. structured like US but Pres has much more
  power
• Everything goes down in this branch
• Constitution isnt as important b/c people dont
  pay attention to it
• President six year dictator
• Fills the gov. with supporters, so that his/her
  party dominates politics
• PRI ruled for a long time
• Old pres passed on power to successor

• Bicameral
• House of Deputies and Senate
• Members serve one term

Legislative Analysis

• Elections have become more competitive in last 10
  yrs.
• Power grew in 90s (pres, Zedillo, wanted it more
  independent)
• Approve judicial appointments got auditing
  office to oversee gov. spending
• Sadly, they get little done due to conflict b/w
  rival/opposing parties
• No tradition of compromise

• Divided into Federal and state systems, 3 levels
• 12 Collegiate Circuit Courts, Unitary Circuit
  Courts, 68 District Courts
• Supreme Court of Justice, located in Mexico City
• 21 magistrates 5 auxiliary judges (appointed by
  pres. and confirmed by the Senate or Permanent
  Committee)
• Justices appointed for life but can be impeached
• The Court divided into 4 chambers, each w/ 5
  justices. (Penal Affairs Chamber, Administrative
  Affairs Chamber, Civil Affairs Chamber, and Labor
  Affairs Chamber)
• Fifth chamber Auxiliary Chamber, is
  responsible for the overload of the four regular
  chambers

• Subordinate to exec. branch never ruled against
  the President in an important case
• During PRI rule, used as a tool to get close to
  president/ led to better job
• Pres. Zedillo added judicial review
• Pres. Fox strengthened branch, more to exec.
• Democratization is helping the branch, but
  corruption is not
