Selecting a Placement
  • Consider the sectors of industry you are
    interested in
  • Consider locations - can you cope with living
    away from home?
  • Remember the first job offer you receive you
    must accept this is the Universitys policy

  • Having made your choices make sure you have
    availed of every opportunity to find out about
    the placement prior to interview
  • Once you have made your choice you will not be
    allowed to change your mind!!

3. Code of Conduct
  • 5 General Rules
  • Your responsibility to cooperate fully, and
    complete forms as appropriate
  • If you opt to secure your own placement, inform
    the Placement Office immediately and complete
    appropriate form
  • All placements must be approved by ME!
  • Behave in professional manner
  • Attend timetabled placement lectures

  • Submit 4 copies of CV with photos and student
    profile form
  • If appropriate attend mock interviews

  • Check notice board and email for information
  • Denise available 9am-12pm Mon-Frid
  • Marian available 2-4pm Weds
  • Inform Placement Office by email of interviews
  • Submit copies of correspondence with employers
  • Be patient process takes time
  • You must start placement on date agreed 48 wks
  • Once job offer made, submit details of salary,
    dates, training programme
  • You must be in good academic standing before
    commencing placement

Code of Conduct
  • Selecting and Securing a placement
  • Ask Careers for additional information
  • 6 applications at a time
  • You must attend interviews
  • If you have extenuating circumstances that result
    in you changing your mind, you must inform the
    office immediately, and before a firm offer has
    been made
  • You must accept 1st offer made to you
  • You cannot leave a placement without Placement
    Tutors permission.entry to year 4 will not be
    permitted
  • Compliance with code is mandatory

Exemption from Placement
  • Granted to students with extensive industrial
    experience
  • Must be full-time work
  • Must be relevant
  • Must be of at least 1 year duration
  • Students must continue to attend lecture until
    exemption request granted
  • Complete appropriate documentation and submit to
    Placement Office by Nov 12th at latest

Exemption from Placement
  • Present a full CV to include references and
    verification will be sought
  • Placement Sub-committee consider applications
  • Where exemption is granted no DIS will be awarded

Overseas Placement
  • Placement available with USA organisations
  • Educational related e.g. BEI,
  • Airline/Airports New York, Newark, LA
  • Leisure Industry WDW
  • Travel Industry CIE Tours
  • Advertised Internships
  • Procedures from application to commencement are
    lengthy
  • Be patient

Overseas Placements
  • Some employers will visit and interview on campus
    (e.g. WDW) others will use telephone interviews
    (e.g. Sheraton) or web applications

  • Disney presentation Mon 28th Oct in Room 17E25
    at Jordanstown
  • Presentation starts at 9am until 10.30am
  • Interviews start at 11am in Rooms 8H03A and 1K05
  • Schedule will be posted on noticeboard
  • If you wish to apply, please inform Denise
    immediately there may be spaces available

Arranging Visa/Travel Insurance
  • All students must have a valid visa
  • Walsh Visa Elizabeth Jess Jords
  • All students must have insurance
  • can be arranged through university
  • 4.20 per week for USA

Visa Regulations
  • Visa arranged through CIEE council for
    international exchange are employer specific
  • The employer sponsors you
  • You cannot move to another employer if you are
    dissatisfied
  • You are not allowed to seek additional employment

Cost of International Travel
  • Visa cost approx 210 45
  • Insurance approx cost 200
  • Flight to USA approx. 450
  • Plus basic start up costs 1000
  • Rent, deposit, transport
  • Medical examination/
  • drug testing costs

  • Be prepared for the credit card culture!!
  • Professional development - how will this be
    enhanced by USA experience?
  • Personal development - how will this be
    enhanced?
  • Homesickness, new lifestyle

Documentation
  • Placement office must be given a copy of your
    insurance documents visa application
  • Students are responsible for making own travel
    arrangements but advise placement office
  • Before you leave to go on placement make 3 copies
    of all documents and keep each copy in a separate
    location
  • Be prepared for hard work - Be prepared for long
    hours working in extreme conditions
  • (New YORK is humid in summer!)
