Bull Run/Manassas
July 21, 1861

Historic Narrative
The battle of Bull Run, or Manassas, took place
about 30 miles outside of Washington D.C. The
battle was on July 21, 1861. It was named after
Bull Run Creek, which ran near the battlefield.
General Thomas Stonewall Jackson was the
general for the Confederacy. When it looked like
it would be a Union victory, Jackson held his
troops together like a stone wall, thus earning
his nickname. After the Confederacy came to a
victory, the Union soldiers retreated all the way
back to Washington D.C. There were 600
casualties on each side, more people that had
ever died in one battle on U.S soil. Many
civilians from Washington D.C. came to watch the
battle, but soon realized that war was not
something fun to watch. The First Battle of Bull
Run made it clear to the North and the South that
it would not be and easy war. It would definitely
last more than 90 days, which is how long
everyone originally thought it was going to last.

Historic Narrative
Appomattox Court House is a town in Virginia. On
April eighth 1865 Union Forces, under Philip
Henry Sheridan, captured Appomattox Court House.
The Confederate troops had 35,000 remaining
soldiers. The next day, Robert E. Lee, Commander
of the Confederate Army, went to the home of
Wilmer McLean to discuss surrender terms with the
Ulysses S. Grant, Commander of Union Army. The
surrender terms that they decided on were
Soldiers could return to their homes, they could
keep any horses that they owned, and officers
could keep their weapons. After the surrender
