Social Care Institute for Excellence

  • Develop guidance for policy and practice
  • Spread that knowledge and guidance
  • So that services improve and improvement is

Services had moved
  • From institutional forms of care to a wider range
    of community based provision
  • From administering care to supporting
    independence
  • Towards a greater diversity of service providers
  • Towards a more organised approach to matching
    needs and priorities to services
  • Towards better coordination across health,
    education and housing

6
Respect
  • They felt that the attitude of staff at the
local social services was patronising and
condescending and that they were not treated with
    enough respect.
  • For me the perfect social worker would be a
caring person and understand the needs of the
service user and follow it through with all the
provisions or adaptations or whatever it is.

7
  • With regard to managers, they should have an
understanding of what its like to do client work
but be trained as managers as well and have the
    right management skills.
  • Instead of bringing management from outside who
may or may not have experience of service users
particular needs if they were to promote from the
bottom level upwards as they progress and get to
the top they would know a lot more about the
services and know a lot more about the needs

  • Organisations need to treat staff with respect,
    dignity and realistic operational guidelines.
    Confused and ambiguous legislation creates
    uncertainty and defensive organisations.

Carers
  • 6 million people in the UK are informal carers
  • Estimated value 57 billion a year
  • 1 in 5 carers provide more than 50 hours a week
    of care
  • Peak age group for carers is 50-59
  • 49 of carers have given up work to care

13
Social care workers must
  • Protect the rights and promote the interests of
    service users and carers,
  • Promote the independence of service users while
    protecting them from harm,
  • Treating each person as an individual,
  • Supporting service users rights to control their
    lives, and
  • Make informed choices about the services they
    receive.
