U.S. Flag
The Flag is the oldest symbol of our country.
Bravery

Courage
Count the stars. How many stars are on the flag?
What do you think they stand for?
There are 50 stars on the flag that represents
each state. The original flag had only 13 stars.
Why?
The 13 colonies are also represented by the 13
red and white stripes.

Why do people stand when they say the Pledge of

Why arent bald eagles found in Hawaii? What
would we need to do to have eagles live there?
Why is it called the Bald Eagle? Is it really
bald?
The bald eagle is a living symbol of the United
States. Bald eagles are found in every state
except Hawaii. The eagle is often used as a
symbol of bravery and strength.

What might the thorns on our national flowers,
the rose, symbolize?
What is the state flower of Texas?
The thorns show that our country is able to
protect itself from enemies.
The rose is our national flower. It symbolizes
peace.

Uncle Sam
Uncle Sam Wilson was a real person. In 1812,
he marked U.S. on barrels of meat for the army.
His friends claimed U.S. meant Uncle Sam. He
wears a vest and striped pants that resembles the
American flag. Congress declared Uncle Sam a
national symbol in 1961.
