1
Reduction of child labour, sexual exploitation
and trafficking in children in Iasi, Botosani and
Suceava counties Item 6 from A3 Regular sports
activities
24th 25th of November 2005 Naples, Italy
2
Context and justification
  • Need for children to be guided and trained during
school in the way to find, obtain, keep a job (as
pointed out by a research results)
  • Lack of adequate alternatives for children to
spend their free time in a pro-social way
  • Low economical level and high unemployment rate
    in the region
  • Reduced level of access to information and lack
    of public information campaign

3
Objectives of the experiment in Iasi
  • Involving the teenagers under 18 years in sport
activities (as a modality of spending their free
time, but also as a social activity)
  • Decreasing the number of minor children and
    teenagers with antisocial behaviour
  • Increasing the security in the neighbourhoods
  • Train the teenagers to be aware of and
responsible for the negative results of their
    antisocial behaviours and attitudes
  • Identifying the minors in risk of social
exclusion and referring them to NGOs or
governmental organisations who can offer help
  • Involving the local institutions and community in
becoming more responsible for the youth education

4
Activities during October 2004 June 2005
  • Training of 40 volunteers, students in Sports and
    Social Worker Faculties
  • Building and training the football teams
  • Organising the local football championship
(between football teams formed by 10 teenagers)
and selecting the winning teams for the town
championship. (There have been formed 5-6
football teams for each of the 5 local Police
Offices 250 children have been organised in 30
    football teams).

Organising the town football championship between
the winners from every local competition. Award
ceremony Debates, discussions with volunteers in
parallel

Outcomes of experimentation
  • 250 children organised in 30 football teams
  • 600 children (friends or schoolmates of the
direct beneficiaries) support and encouraged the
football players they might be considered as
being indirect involved in the experimentation
  • Changing the negative attitude of the children
regarding the relationship with the police the
image of the police officer became a positive
one, due to the fact that they have been involved
in the competition as members of the football
team and a co-partners / friends with the
    children
  • During the experimentation, the number of
children involved in the project increased. It
was a good indicator of the childrens interest
in being involved in social activity for spending
their free time, if they are organised in a
    pleasant in interesting way

6
Outcomes of experimentation
  • The parents, teachers and people from the
community offered a positive feedback regarding
    the program.
  • The parents of the children direct involved in
the project reported the improvement of the
behaviours and attitudes of their children, in
    both family and school situations
  • Following the dissemination process, the local
community has been informed about the results of
the program there have been written 70 de
articles and 15 radio and TV shows presented
    information about the project
  • Although the program was initially design to be
run in the Iasi city, it was extended to other 3
small towns near Iasi, at the requests of the
police officers, but also of the children who
found out of the program and expressed their
willingness to be involved in the football
    championship.

7
Outcomes of experimentation
  • A local partnership between 4 NGOs and 5 local
public authorities was signed and a summer
program was implemented between June August
    2005

    the football competition YOUTH AGAINST
DELINQUENCY were organized 3 prosocial gangs.
