Aims
  • Increase general participation rates in lifelong
    learning
  • To raise the profile of the arts, culture, media,
    and popular science as vehicles for learning,
    training, employment, and personal development
  • Improve levels of engagement with hard to reach
    groups
  • To assist in the development of Merthyr Tydfil as
    a university town.
  • To increase the number of community members
    engaged in formal, further or higher education

Merthyr Tydfil
Unemployment currently runs at 7.9 (10.6 for
males). Only 56 of the working age population
are in gainful employment the overall Welsh
average is 70. Only 32 of people of working
age are in full-time employment. In Merthyr,
33 of people of working age have no formal
educational qualifications In 2001, only 15.4 of
people over 16 were participating in any form of
learning in the area

Snapshot Evaluation
Targets 2007 -2008 Engage with 1,000 project
participants. Involve 2,000 people in the Arts
and Science Festival (Romeo and Juliet)
Increase numbers of work experience
placements. Increase number projects that are
OCN accredited

Placements 13 individuals gained 16 OCNs

Achieved to date We have 179 registered
computer suite users (100 more than
Jan-March) 1406 computer suite visits by
registered users. 1,377 recorded visitors
include projects/meetings. 1,200 query based
visits.

To whom it may concern.   I write to offer my
thanks for arranging this superb event. My wife
and I thoroughly enjoyed the Rob Brydon evening.
Merthyr is a town with a distinct lack of
opportunity for arts or theatre entertainment,
and this event (as well as the others you are
arranging) is most welcome.   I have recently
moved into the area from Stratford-upon-Avon, an
area which benefits from a wide variety of live
entertainment. I was shocked to learn how little
opportunities there are for the people of Merthyr
in terms of arts or theatre - the fact that there
is not even a proper theatre venue is appalling.
  What you are trying to achieve is excellent
and I applaud your efforts. Name and Address
