1992 led to internationally agreed criteria for
    sustainable forest management
  • Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) established 1996
certification originally on a forest by forest
    basis
  • PEFC launched 1999 and first national scheme
    endorsed in May 2000.
  • 2. World Bank pressure

How does COC work for James Latham?
  • Purchasing
  • Goods inwards
  • Stock control
  • Further processing
  • Sales
  • Internal /external auditing

16
Purchasing
  • Preferred supplier list with details of scope of
    certification.
  • Contract/purchase order clearly states material
    required and certification
  • Document kept separate for auditing
  • Annual certificate check

17
Goods inwards
  • Goods in should be marked with certification
    details
  • We segregate where possible and mark the ends of
all timber with a colour code.
  • We identify panels where packing is removed.
  • Landing returns and receipt notes are kept and
    files separately
  • We have a procedure for handling unmarked product

18
Stock Control
  • Goods segregated where possible
  • Counted twice a year
  • Sales
  • Customers order should show requirement for
    certified material
  • Our sales order and the goods must show order
    number and COC number.
  • Records must be kept and filed separately.

19
Certification the future?
  • Clearly adds cost but it is a requirement to
promote timber as the only sustainable building
    material
  • PEFC is a vital tool in certification armoury.
  • We sell less than 5 with COC this must and
will change. COC needs to go down the supply
    chain
  • With in 10 years all timber used in the UK will
    be certified as sustainable!
