  • Who here has heard of Microsoft? Perhaps youve
used some of our fine products, like Microsoft
Bob? Halo 2? Or everyones favorite multimedia
    app MSPAINT
  • Thank your for taking time out of your busy
schedule to attend this information session and
eat pizza. Were going to go through some quick
slides, show a damn funny video feature Ed Helms
from the Daily Show, and then have a raffle.
  • My name is Dennis Cheung, and 6 years ago I was
where you are today crossing N. Charles St
mutliple times a day to attend job fairs,
    information sessions, interviews.
  • 1999 was the height of the .com boom, and so
there were plenty of wild and crazy startups, as
well as the traditional companies but even then
    I chose Microsoft
  • Who here has heard that MSFT is too large? Or
that if you join you become a souless cog in the
    giant borg cube. NOT TRUE.
  • In June 2000, I joined as a Program Manager in
Office for the Mac. At the end of my second year,
I not only shipped a product, but I also had the
authority to recall a product which I did. I also
have a patent pending for a feature that over 2
    million users use every day.
  • Does this sound extraordinary to you?
Unbelievable perhaps? Because it doesnt to me.
    Not at Microsoft.
  • At this point, Id like to introduce to fellow
alumni Ilya Brown and Michael Hilsdale to share
with you their ordinary extraordinary Microsoft
    experiences.

  • Microsoft hires for all different positions
    finance, marketing, technical documentation, but
today at this event we are focusing on these
    three positions.
  • Unfortunately, the names arent terribly
descriptive, so let me do my best to tell you
what those positions mean to me
  • Program Managers are the people who are
responsible for the product, but they dont
manage people directly. A program manager has to
be able to solve problems quickly and creatively,
to coordinate different teams, to do identify
what needs to be done for a product to ship, and
make it happen. Program Managers typically design
features. Program Managers are a technical
position since they work very closely with
    Developers.
  • Software Design Engineer this one is easy. Its
really just a fancy word for a development
engineer. These are the people who write the code
that enables Microsoft to ship great products.
  • Software Design Engineer in Test Develop Test
plans, Works closely with the PM and Dev to come
up with tools, the automation, the process to
ensure that the product is of quality for the
customer. Its more than just QA - It combines
building with breaking. These are the people who
    ensure that

  • Theres not really much to say about this slide
other than whats up there already. I will say
    this
  • 1. From my experience of living in Silicon
Valley, Microsoft really does pay better than
average salaries when I compare with some of my
    friends.
  • 2. My friends really like that I gift them
Microsoft software. Considering that I can buy
Xbox games for 20 yeah, theyre jealous.
  • Other than that, Microsoft has great benefits. In
fact, Ed Helms will help explain this in the
    upcoming video.
