Title: Franklin D. Roosevelt

1
Franklin D. Roosevelt The New Deal1933-1938
  • By Mandy Lauw

2
Fireside Chats
  • Radio speeches by Roosevelt to address his people
  • Enormously successful, illustrated by letters
    sent to White House
  • Reached a high percentage of the population
  • More than 28 official Chats

3
Analysis of two Fireside Chats
  • Roosevelt claimed to be honest at all times with
    his people
  • By analysis of Chats, information can be
retrieved about Roosevelts view and attitudes
  • I have examined if and how Roosevelts view on
American legislation and government changed over
the period of 1933-1938 due to developments of
    the New Deal
  • This I have done by analysing two of his Fireside
Chats one of May 7th, 1933 and one of April
    14th, 1938

4
Hypothesis
  • Roosevelts view on American legislation has
    changed over this period
  • Particularly concerning the co-operation between
president and Congress, and government and
    president
  • Caused also by growing opposition and resistance
of opponents and Supreme Court in later 1930s

5
Textual analysis
  • Textual analysis can show which information in a
    text is preferred
  • The official text can be manipulated by analysis
  • Information which is not obvious by reading a
text, can be retrieved by textual analysis
  • The programmes used in order to do this are LMC,
    Makbas and Tact

An example

Conclusion
  • By examining word frequencies and collocations,
the desired information can be found
  • Roosevelts view on government and Congress has
    changed by analysing his texts
  • Less co-operation between the different
    institutions and the president himself
  • Congress less associated with legislation and
    authorisation
  • President felt more solely responsible for
    recovery of country
