Title: Mustafa

1
Mustafa
Mustafa is a post-16 learner taking the Advanced
Diploma in environmental and land-based studies.
He has been drawn to this Line of Learning
through very positive experiences of science and
geography at GCSE. He achieved good grades at
GCSE and intends to progress to university. At
this stage though, he is only clear that his
interest is in the natural environment and
sustainable development and he is keen to
explore other aspects of the sector. For example,
he takes a keen interest in current affairs and
has joined one of the development charities and
receives a regular newsletter which reports on
its work overseas. He takes his membership
seriously and has already, whilst in year 11,
organised fund-raising activities with his peers
to support an appeal to provide clean water in
one of the Sub-Saharan countries.

Extended Project
Mustafa tackled his EP in two halves He started
out by undertaking a survey of water management
on a global scale and considered the impact of
climate change. He speculated on the likely
outcomes on the basis of apparent trends and
patterns. For this he worked from secondary
sources of available data. For the second part,
he focused on his local region, researching
fluctuating water levels in one of the reservoirs
over the previous 5 year period. He reviewed the
underlying conditions and institutional responses
to water shortage and fluctuations.Hhe
particularly focused on one year that had
experienced a period of drought followed by flash
floods, realising the potential problems that
each could cause. In his report, he used the
results of his analysis to predict future trends
in climatic effects and water supply for his area
and he produced a hypothetical action plan for
dealing with likely issues that may arise.
process and the many issues that arose. As a
result of his contribution and readiness to
learn, he was given particular responsibility for
researching the environmental record of a major
fertilizer company.
Mustafa had the opportunity of a three week
internship with a research company concerned with
socially responsible investment, particularly
focused on pension funds. Mustafa was initially
able to collaborate with a team of young
researchers who were engaged in investigating the
portfolio of a major multi-national company
engaged in resource extraction. He was fascinated
by both the complexity of the research
