What We Stand For
  • At Tennsco, we make what we sell. We believe the
best way to build a quality product is to be in
control of the entire process... from raw
materials right on through to customer delivery.
And every step in between. Our extensive use of
CAD systems for product design and shelving
systems layouts is our technological commitment
to product service and excellence. And, our use
of automation and in-house tool design and
    construction throughout the process assures
product excellence at a cost less than our
    competitors.

9
Customer Service
  • Customer service is valued highly at Tennsco,
which is why customers can place orders by phone,
    fax, e-mail, or websites.
  • Customer questions and complaints are handled
directly through the Customer Service Department.
  • When complaints are received, the CSD handles the
complaint by doing whatever is necessary to make
the customer happy and satisfied with not only
    our products but with us.
  • When the Tennsco name plate goes on, we know
exactly whats gone into the product it
    identifies quality, value, and an
    uncompromising dedication to customer service.

10
Market Strategy
  • The market strategy use by Tennsco is to offer
the highest quality product as well as the best
    customer service available.
  • Tennsco is able to obtain customers over lower
priced manufacturers because of their reputation
    of quality.

11
Market Strategy
  • An advantage Tennsco has from running the entire
system themselves, is that they are capable of
keeping a better watch over the level of quality
in their products. Another advantage of keeping
the entire system in house, is that they are able
    to keep their prices low.

12
Market Strategy
  • Because of Tennscos high level of quality, they
were presented with the Grainger award in 2001
    for product excellence.

13
Customer Base
  • Tennsco currently has customers in all fifty
    states.
  • In 2002, they supplied the University of Alabama
with lockers for a new recreation facility.
  • Manufactured shelving for the San Jose library
    which opened in 2003.

14
Inbound
  • Tennsco obtains raw materials from over 1,000
    vendor suppliers.
  • The large number of suppliers has led to growth.
  • Once the raw materials such as steel, paint, and
hardware are obtained from the various vendor
suppliers throughout the nation Tennsco carries
out the rest of the steps through the supply
    chain.
  • The use of computer based technology creates an
easy system to check and monitor inventory
    levels.

15
Inventory Management
  • Tennsco Corporation is facilitated with a
computer software system, aptly named Tennsco,
integrated with the utmost technology, allowing
inventory to be balanced efficiently and
    precisely.

16
When to Reorder?
  • Every time an order is placed, whether through
the internet, by phone, or by mail Tennscos
    computer software automatically calculates the
percentage of materials required to fulfill the
    order.
  • Ex it calculates the amount of steel needed for
each unit, as well as the amount of paint. It
even gives the amount of screws needed.

17
When to Reorder? (cont.)
  • Once the order is placed, the materials are taken
out of inventory, which is all registered into
    the computer system.
  • After analyzing the inventory, the computer
system monitors how close it is to the target
    zone.
  • Basically the target zone lets them know when to
    reorder.
  • Once they receive notice that their inventory has
reached the target zone, Tennsco places an order
to receive more supplies, thus allowing Tennsco
to keep their inventory in line.

18
Inventory
  • As with other companies, Tennsco keeps a set
inventory however, the stock level of the
    inventory depends on the products.
  • It could range anywhere from 50 pieces to 50
    thousand pieces.

19
Where production occurs?
  • Production of products is all in-house.
  • The production can take place in any one of the
six plants or a combination of the plants
    operating in Dickson.

21
Where they distribute to?
  • Tennsco makes their products in-house at any
    number of the plants.
  • After the products have been completed, Tennsco
ships the products to distribution centers or to
    wholesale catalogs.
  • Here are a few of the wholesale catalogs their
    products are featured in
  • Grainger www.grainger.com
  • Global Equipment www.globalequip.com
  • McMaster Carr www.mcmastercarr.com

22
Retail Facilities
  • Tennsco Corporation does not have retail
    facilities carrying their products only.
  • Tennsco sells more of its products through
catalogs than stores however, some products can
    be purchased at retail stores.
  • For instance, some Grainger locations carry
Tennsco products, but since they do not keep
stock on some of the bigger items, they must
order the items. This is why they do more sells
    from catalogs.

23
Organized Transportation
  • Tennsco handles moving their products from plant
to plant to complete the assembly of these
    products.
  • There are several material handlers that receive
reports daily making them aware of what products
need to be moved to another plant to complete the
    assembly.

24
Example of Transportation
  • Say a product is assembled at Plant 3, but it
needs to be shipped to Plant 2 to be painted.
  • The material handler has already received the
report saying which products will need to be
moved to another plant, so the material handler
makes all the arrangements for transporting the
products to another plant before the product is
completely assembled, which allows Plant 2 to be
prepared to paint when the product is actually
transported to them so there is not time wasted.

25
Use of Information Systems
  • If supplies get low, (when they reach their
target zone) they place a call or send a fax for
    stocking orders.

26
Third Party Logistics
  • Once the products are completed, the material
handlers transport the products to the end users
requests, whether it is through UPS or trucking
    companies.
  • If it is a small package that meets the
requirements, the products are shipped via UPS
  • However, some products are on a much larger
scale, like shelves for a entire library in
Jacksonville. These shelves way approximately 50
thousand pounds total, thus they will be shipped
    by trucks.
