Tchoukball

What is Tchoukball?
  • Pronounced Chuke-ball
  • The name comes from the 'tchouk' sound of the
    ball rebounding off the frame
  • Invented by Swiss biologist Dr. Hermann Brandt in
    the late 60's
  • Introduced in the 70s
  • Mixture of Handball and Keep Away
  • As intense as you want

Dr. Hermann Brandt
  • Wanted to Create a Sport with high intensity but
    low injury rate
  • Won 'Annual World Prize of the FIEP'
    (International Physical Education Federation).
    From his famous paper 'A Scientific Criticism of
    Team Games'
  • Paper explained about creating perfect game with
    reduced injuries
  • Died in November, 1972

Quick Play
  • Each team can make a maximum of 3 passes
  • Each player may take a maximum of 3 steps
  • The handball can be thrown at either rebound
    surface
  • A point is scored to the team without the ball if
  • the throw misses the reboundsurface
  • the ball bounces in the D
  • the ball hits the player who threw it.
  • A point is scored to the team with the ball if it
    bounces into the air and touches the ground
    outside the D before the opposing team can catch
    it.
  • If neither occurs then play continues.

  • No player can stand in the 'D' with the ball,
    although it is allowed to be airborne.
  • Only 3 consecutive shots at a frame from both
    teams is allowed.
  • Any interfering with another teams passes or
    movement is not allowed
  • Only 3 passes between a team is allowed. Making 4
    is considered a foul.
  • Catching a rebound from your teams shot is not
    allowed.
  • Stepping out of bounds with the ball is a foul
  • Dropping the ball is a foul
  • A foul results in the opposing team gaining
    possesion at the site of the foul. This team must
    then make one pass before they can shoot at goal.
    After a point is scored the other team restarts
    the game behind the scoring frame.

Equipment

Frames
  • Must be sufficiently taught
  • Frame must be fixed as to not endanger players
  • Must be approved by F.I.T.B.

Ball
  • Must be leather covering a round rubber bladder
  • Men 5860cm in circumference weighing 425-475
    grams
  • Women and Junior 54-56cm circumference weighing
    325-400grams
  • Co-ed games use Women/Junior ball

Playing Area
  • 40 x 20 meter rectangle, consisting of play and 2
    forbidden zones recommended
  • Play area divided into 2 zones by middle line
  • Forbidden zone is a semi-circle with a 3 meter
    radius measured from center of each base line
  • Front base of frame is placed in the middle of
    the diameter of this zone
  • Lines should be clearly visible
  • Lines are part of the area they mark
  • 2 meter area around play area is recommended

Players and Teams
  • Team can be up to 15 players but only 12 can be
    on match sheet
  • Only 9 can play from each team at a time 3 are
    subs
  • Subs can take place in front of score table or
    team benches, without stopping game
  • Injured players can be replaced as soon as they
    are off the field of play
  • Subs can only come in if a point is scored
  • Players must have uniforms and clear numbers from
    5-20
  • Players where shoes without studs unless on grass
  • Jewelry is forbidden

Referees
  • There must be three refs for each match, one whom
    is responsible for scoring and time keeping
  • Refs control game according to rules
  • Scorekeeper records results, consider offences
    and foul play, oversees subs
  • Ref outfits are different from players, they
    carry whistle, yellow and red cards

Matches
  • Men 3 period of 15 minutes, with no more then 5
    minutes between
  • Women/Junior 3 periods of 12 minutes, with no
    more then 5 minutes between
  • Ref decides stop and reset of stopwatch incase of
    injury
  • Game ends right at final whistle

Awarding Points
  • A player scores points if the ball rebounding
    from the frame
  • Touches field of play before defender catches
  • Touches defender who fails to control it
  • Touches defenders leg
  • The team with the highest score at end of time is
    winner

Loss of Points
  • Players lose points if
  • Shoots and misses the frame
  • The rebounding ball after shot falls out of play
    or in forbidden zone
  • The ball rebounds onto shooter
  • He touches the ball having a contact with the
    forbidden zone or being outside of play area
    after a teammate shot
  • He deflects rebounding ball into forbidden zone
    or out after shot
  • He deliberately touches the ball preventing it
    from falling out or into forbidden zone.
    (Intenional)
  • While trying to catch ball, he steps into the
    forbidden zone or out of play area
