Title: Welcome to Sacred Heart of Jesus School

1
Welcome to Sacred Heart of Jesus School
Intermediate Division (Parenting 101)
  • Tips for helping your child manage the unique
    challenges the intermediate division experience
    will bring

2
Your (Newish) Role as Parent
  • Now that your child is in the Intermediate
    Division, it is
  • NOT TIME TO STEP BACK .Your children are in a
    new environment.
  • They will have many new and exciting challenges
    that require your support.
  • They need you to STEP UP and help them more so
that they can fully adjust to the newness of the
    Intermediate Division.
  • It is like first grade all over - only they are
    bigger!

3
What Students Should Wear
  • Modest and appropriate non-offensive clothing
    (logos).
  • Flip-flops are not permitted, sandals are
permitted if they have a heel strap.
  • For Recess, which is almost always outside -
bring a jacket and warm clothes once the weather
    begins to change.

4
What Students Need to have for the Intermediate
Division
  • Lots of lined notebook paper (3 hole kind)
  • Ample supply of pencils (Five is a good number)
  • A few pens (Three is a good number, at least one
    red)

5
What Students Need to Bring to School
  • Encourage your child to bring a positive attitude
and willingness to ask to for help when they need
    it.
  • Remind them that their teachers are here to help!
  • A change of clothes (shirt and shorts or
trackpants) for gym class. Running shoes must be
worn in the gym. In winter if running shoes are
worn outside, then a different pair must be used
    for gym class.

6
What Students DO NOTNeed to Bring to School
  • Large Amounts of Money
  • Skateboards and Scooters
  • Electronic devices such as iPods and CD players
  • Cell phones are permitted, but must be turned off
and left in the office during the regular school
day and picked up at the end of the day.
  • Gum

7
Your Childs Agenda Book
  • Students will be assisted in using their agenda
to help them develop organizational skills and
learn their schedule. They are required to carry
    their agendas to each class.
  • Each class your child will be instructed to write
their homework in the space provided for each
subject in the agenda book. If there is no
homework for a class, they should write the word
None in the corresponding assignment box.
  • You can help them learn how to manage their
workload more quickly by asking them to show you
their homework assignments and match them to what
is written in their agenda book. This is a great
way to check that they have finished all their
    homework.
  • Should you have any questions or concerns
regarding your child, you may use the agenda book
to communicate with your childs teacher.

8
Intermediate Division Homework Tips
  • Set up a routine that includes a specific and
consistent time and place free from distractions
for your child to complete homework. Next to the
T.V. or a sibling is not an ideal setting.
  • Help your child learn to do homework on the night
it was assigned to avoid the night before
    syndrome.
  • Check accuracy of recorded homework in your
childs assignment book by going to the Class
    Portal for each teacher.
  • Never allow your child to leave homework at home.
  • Homework is often used as part of the
following days lesson as a follow-up or
assessment activity. Keep homework in the
    binder.
  • Discourage your child from calling home when
homework or supplies are forgotten. Students
need to build the skills needed for academic
success, part of which is getting their materials
    to school on their own.

9
Using Teacher Portals
  • Ask your child to write down all of their
    teachers names.
  • Open your web browser. Type this into the URL
    bar
  • http//www.haltonrc.edu.on.ca/Schools/shoj2/
  • Click Enter or Return to tell the computer to go
    to the website.
  • Find the appropriate teacher web page.
  • Bookmark the website as a favorite, youll use it
    often.
  • Repeat the process for each teacher.
  • You could also go to the Halton Catholic District
School Board website (Google if necessary)
  • You may use the contact the teacher link to
email the teacher should you have any concerns
    or questions about your child.

Sample Student Schedule
17
How Can We Do This to Children?
  • While it is true that our schedule
  • Looks busy and a bit complicated
  • It is also true that our schedule allows for
  • Decreased time in hallways
  • Increased academic time for all subjects taught
  • Larger blocks of uninterrupted learning time
  • Greater teacher preparation and specialization
    for Rotary subjects
  • Worried about your child adjusting?
  • We have found that most seventh grade students
are able to master the schedule in about two
weeks, and many are able to learn the schedule as
well as or better than their teachers!

18
Curriculum Connections
  • Curriculum outlines and expectations are
numerous and different for every subject.
  • For a complete review please refer to the
    Ontario Ministry of Education website

  • Write any comments you would like to make on the
  • third page.
  • Return the white envelope to your childs
homeroom teacher via your child the day after you
    receive it at home.
  • You may keep the actual report card.
  • Report Card Interview night is only with Homeroom
teacher. Rotary teacher interviews may be booked
    separately.

21
Parent Conferences
  • Purpose is to provide a time and place for a face
to face meeting to discuss strategies for student
    improvement.
  • If you have some important concerns and wish to
speak with all of the Grade 7 teachers, please
send in a note, or email, requesting such and
state an approximate day and time that would be
convenient for you. The homeroom teacher will
reply confirming a meeting when all teachers are
    available.

22
What to do When Your Child Comes Home with a
Problem
  • Validate the problem, verify that their concern
is an important one. Tell them you love them,
and that you will get involved in order to help.
  • Avoid negative talk about teachers or other
    students involved.
  • Contact the teacher via email or phone the
following school day during school hours.
  • Working together, we will solve the problem.

23
Out of School?
  • Full day absences Please call the school. If
you know in advance, you may send a note.
  • Arriving to School late Your child should check
in at the front office so that he or she may sign

specifying what time you will pick them up from
    school.

  • You also probably remember that the bottom
portion of the permission slip has a box for you
to check if you are able to volunteer your
    services for chaperoning.
  • We do not call everyone who checks the box
volunteering as a chaperone, we will inform you
