Twenty years from now you will be more
disappointed by the things that you didnt do
than by the ones that you do. So throw off the
bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch
the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream.
Discover.

Developing a specialist school ethos
12
PUPIL VOICE
13
If the school has a philosophy of engaging with
its students, harnessing their energy and
enthusiasm, and giving children responsibility
for their lives and learning, the school council
will be in harmony with the school ethos.
The more the students are given opportunities to
demonstrate how much their participation can
contribute to the well-being of the school, the
more that democratic engagement will strengthen
the school ethos. Thus a vicious circle will be
created.

School) 2006

Creativity in schools needs to be taken far
more seriously if it is to avoid being squeezed
out of a crowded curriculum
was a recent report on the BBC website
Successful schools are creative schools
said the Commons education committee chairman,
Labour MP Barry Sheerman

The difficult question . . .
24
What are our learning gains?
25
Very few schools had developed assessment tools
for teacher and peer assessments.
26
  • Paper-based assessment
  • On line assessment
  • Portfolios
  • Log books
  • Some are tick boxes,
  • others allow space for text

27
How have I done?
PET is assessment speak for Personal
Effectiveness Tool
28
  • Having an effective assessment tool
  • A system to monitor students progression
  • in enterprise capability

None of the schools visited had achieved all of
these factors but several were working towards
putting them in place
29
  • Activities
  • Specify levels
  • Specify progression
  • Clarify learning objectives
  • Show learning gains

30
