China Falls to Communism (Maos road to power)
  • 1934 Mao led the famous Long March 100,000
    people started only 20,000 survived and his
    communists were victorious against the
    nationalists after a three year civil war.
  • Chang Kai Shek was the leader of Chinese
    Nationalists and was supported by the US.
  • Mao was the leader of the communists, he believed
    the strength was with the peasants.

  • After the communist victory over Chiang Kai-shek
    in 1949, and the establishment of the People's
    Republic of China, Mao's position was
    strengthened The U.S. failed to recognize the
    peoples republic of China.
  • Great Leap Forward (1958)- established collective
    communities ? direct Soviet influence. It failed
    miserably people resented Soviet influence.
  • Firmly rebutted figures--quoted in Hong Kong
    newspapers--that 20 million had perished. "How

Cultural Revolution in China
  • Mass campaign in China ordered by Mao in 1966,
    aimed at renewing popular support for
    revolutionary communist. In the Cultural
    Revolution, Mao used the army and the student
    population against his opponents. It also was a
    great failure
  • Mao annihilates his enemies claiming an estimated
    400,000 lives
