The Five Pillars of Islam as Observed by Muslims
  • Muslims call them the ibadat (acts of
    service).
  • Represents Muslims most basic beliefs and
    practices.
  • They are the five obligatory acts all Muslims are
    expected to carry out.
  • Considered as acts of formal worship in Islam.
  • Might slightly vary in expression due to cultural
    and historical influence.

The First Pillarthe declaration of
faith(shahada)
  • Ashhadu anna la ilaha illa llah, wa anna
    Muhammadan rasula llah.
  • This means- I bear witness that there is no god
    but God, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of
    God.

The Second Pillarprayer(salat)
  • Old traditional saying Prayer is like a stream
    of sweet water which flows past the door of each
    of you. A Muslim plunges into it five times a
    day.
  • Two types
  • Dua- petition, supplication or invocation
  • Salat- follow a precise pattern dawn (fajr),
    after midday (zuhr), mid-afternoon (maghrub) and
    night (isha).

The Third Pillaralmsgiving(zakat)
  • Zakat means purity
  • Commonly translated as alms tax, range from
    2.5 to 10 of ones profit.
  • People purify their wealth by giving a share of
    it to God.
  • Zakat is given to
  • The needy, the poor, those who collect the zakat,
    those whose hearts are to be reconciled to Islam,
    captives, those in debt, those who are fighting
    in Gods path, and travelers.

The Fourth Pillarfasting(sawm)
  • Fast during the whole month of Ramadam
  • Abstention form food, drink and sexual
    intercourse ending at sunset.
  • Muhammads first revelation.
  • The ninth month of the lunar calendar.
  • Not always falls in the same season of the year.
  • Maghrib (sunset prayer)- O God, I have fasted
    for You, and I have believed in You, and with
    Your food I break the fast. In the name of God,
    the Merciful.
