Why is tackling alcohol harms important?
  • According to the 2007/08 BCS, victims believed
    the offender(s) to be under the influence of
    alcohol in 45 per cent of all violent incidents,
    similar to the level in the 2006/07 BCS (46).
  • In 2007/08, a quarter of BCS respondents
    perceived people being drunk or rowdy in public
    places to be a fairly/very big problem a similar
    proportion to the previous year (26).
  • Health harms are significant in terms of
    increasing numbers of deaths and hospital
    admissions, with alarming data appearing for
    young people
  • While there has been a decrease in the proportion
    of young people drinking, those who do drink more
    and more often.

How did we get here?
  • Governments first alcohol harm reduction
    strategy, published by the Cabinet Office in 2004
  • Safe.Sensible.Social The Next Steps in the
    National Alcohol Strategy was published on June
    5th 2007 by the Home Office and Department of
    Health, with major contributions from DCSF and
    DCMS.
  • The long-term goal of Safe.Sensible.Social was
    tominimise the health harms, violence and
    anti-social behaviour associated with alcohol,
    while ensuring that people are able to enjoy
    alcohol safely and responsibly.
  • Bolstered with Home Secretary speech Review of
    LA03 Youth Alcohol Action Plan Dept Health
    Consultation

What difference do we want to make?
  • Outcomes
  • Fewer alcohol-related violent assaults.
  • A reduction in the publics concern about drunk
    and rowdy behaviour.
  • Fewer hospital admissions for alcohol-related
    chronic and acute ill health.
  • A reduction in the frequency and amount of
    alcohol consumed by young people, and an increase
    in the age of first use
