The Sentence.
  • A sentence is a group of words which makes
    complete sense.

When we write a sentence, we must remember three
things-
  • The words must be placed in their proper order to
    make complete sense.
  • A sentence always begins with a capital letter.
  • A sentence must end with a full stop (.) and it
    is a question then with a question mark (?).

  • The person or thing we are talking about.
  • What we say about the person or thing.

Kinds of the sentence.
Sentences are of four kinds.
  • Declarative sentence or Assertive sentence.
  • Interrogative sentence.
  • Imparative sentence.
  • Exclamatory sentence.

A declarative or assertive sentence.
  • A sentence that makes a statement or assertion is
    called a declarative or assertive sentence.

  • I live in Delhi.

Interrogative sentence.
  • A sentence that asks a question is called an
    interrogative sentence.

Imperative sentence.
  • A sentence that expresses a command, or an
    entreaty is called an imperative sentence.

Exclamatory sentence.
  • A sentence that expresses strong feeling is
    called an exclamatory sentence.

The Phrase and The Clause.
  • The Phrase-
  • A group of words, which makes sense, but not
    complete sense, is called a Phrase.
  • As-
  • The sun rises in the east.
  • Jack and Jill went up the hill.
  • There came a giant to my door.
  • The tops of the mountains were covered with snow.

  • Clause-
  • A group of words, which contains a subject and a
    predicate is called a clause.
  • As-
  • He has a chain which is made of gold.
  • People who pay their debts are trusted.
  • We cannot start while it is raining.
