Title: MATERIAL PROPERTIES

1
MATERIAL PROPERTIES
2
3 TYPES
  • Mechanical
  • Thermal
  • Chemical

3
MECHANICAL
  • Mechanical properties are characteristics
exhibited when outside forces are applied to
    them.
  • Tension
  • Compression
  • Elasticity
  • Plasticity
  • Brittleness
  • Toughness
  • Ductility

4
Tension
  • Tension is the pulling force acting upon an
    object.
  • Tensile strength is the ability of a material to
    resist stretching.

5
Compression
  • Compression is the pushing force acting upon an
    object.
  • Compressive strength is the ability of a material
    to resist compression.

6
Strain vs. Stress
  • Strain Is defined as the change in length
    caused from a force.
  • Equation Change in length / original length

7
Strain vs. Stress
  • Stress Is defined as the force applied to a
    given area of the object.
  • Equation Force / Area

8
Elasticity
  • Refers to a materials ability to return to its
original size and shape once the force has ended.
  • 2 conditions
  • Must not stretch so much that it fails under
    load.
  • Must return to original size after load has been
    removed.

9
Plasticity
  • Opposite of Elasticity.
  • Does not change back to original shape after
    materials has been removed.
  • An undesired characteristic

10
Brittleness
  • Opposite of Plasticity
  • Refers to the ease at which a material will break
    with little or no bending.

11
Toughness
  • Refers to the ability to withstand sudden shock
    without breaking

12
Ductility
  • The ability of a material to be changed in shape
    without breaking
