Early Life

• Born in Kikcudbrightsher, Scotland on July 6.
• When he was 12 years old he went out to sea.
• At 16 he was given command of a ship.
• A few weeks later he killed a sailor, he then
  went to jail.

Adult Years

• In 1773 one of his sailors died.
• He was accused of murder, he was sent to jail.
• John added the name Jones to hide his identity.
• After he got out in 1777 he was forced to sail
  France.

Importance During Revolution

• While he was sailing he flew the American flag on
  his boat.
• He became the first person to sail an American
  flag.
• In 1779, he came face to face with an enemy
  battle ship.
• All he had to say was Ive not yet begun to
  fight. It became a famous saying to him and his
  country.

After Years

• He returned to Russia, and was rewarded with gold
  and money.
• In 1790, he was forced to leave.
• John returned to Paris and died on July 18, 1792

Now

• We celebrate his birthday every year on July 6.
• In Scotland they have a museum to honor him.
