  • Now he waited seven days, according to the
appointed time set by Samuel, but Samuel did not
come to Gilgal and the people were scattering
from him. So Saul said, Bring to me the burnt
offering and the peace offerings. And he offered
the burnt offering. As soon as he finished
offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came
and Saul went out to meet him and to greet him.
But Samuel said, What have you done? And Saul
said, Because I saw that the people were
scattering from me, and that you did not come
within the appointed days, and that the
    Philistines were assembling at Michmash,
therefore I said, Now the Philistines will come
down against me at Gilgal, and I have not asked
the favor of the Lord. So I forced myself and
    offered the burnt offering.

  • Samuel said to Saul, You have acted foolishly
you have not kept the commandment of the Lord
your God, which He commanded you, for now the
Lord would have established your kingdom over
Israel forever. But now your kingdom shall not
endure. The Lord has sought out for Himself a man
after His own heart, and the Lord has appointed
him as ruler over His people, because you have
not kept what the Lord commanded you.

III. The Humble Person Worships God (18-20)
  • Surely he cuts cedars for himself, and takes a
cypress or an oak and raises it for himself among
the trees of the forest. He plants a fir, and the
rain makes it grow. Then it becomes something for
a man to burn, so he takes one of them and warms
himself he also makes a fire to bake bread. He
also makes a god and worships it he makes it a
graven image and falls down before it. Half of it
he burns in the fire over this half he eats meat
as he roasts a roast and is satisfied.

  • He also warms himself and says, Aha! I am warm,
I have seen the fireNo one recalls, nor is there
knowledge or understanding to say, I have burned
half of it in the fire and also have baked bread
over its coals. I roast meat and eat it. Then I
make the rest of it into an abomination, I fall
down before a block of wood! He feeds on ashes
a deceived heart has turned him aside. And he
cannot deliver himself, nor say, Is there not a
    lie in my right hand?

  • It is Pride which has been the chief cause of
misery in every nation and every family since the
world began. Other vices may sometimes bring
people together you may find good fellowship and
jokes and friendliness among drunken people or
unchaste people. But pride always means enmity -
it is enmity. And not only enmity between man and
    man, but enmity to God.
