Title: In the past, television was only distributed by cable, satellite, or terrestrial

1
Modern TV
  • In the past, television was only distributed by
    cable, satellite, or terrestrial
  • systems. Now with increase in internet speed,
    people are becoming more
  • internet savvy and they need more from
    todays television.
  • People need to watch regular TV as well as surf
internet using same box they are having like
    TV, PC, portable devices etc.
  • People need to watch on demand videos.
  • People need to view anything from low budget,
    home camcorder
  • productions to expensive professional
    productions.
  • People need to record their favorite video
    without using storage device.
  • People need to share or allow others to watch
    there home made video
  • from anywhere.
  • The solution to all above needs is in Internet
    based television.

2
The Internet based television can be delivered
using below mentioned technologies.
3
Internet TV
This type of internet TV is like surfing to a
particular website using the internet. In this
case people are directly connected to world via
internet. Any small, medium or large organization
can create there own broadcasting point (like web
server) and people who are directly connected can
watch the video that is available on that
particular server. The models looks like this

Internet TV
  • The Major Barriers of the Internet TV are
  • Bandwidth limitations The bandwidth issue
primarily meant that streams were using low
bandwidth and that resulted in poor quality.
  • Streaming Technologies The streaming are not up
to the mark which cannot have great experience
with low bandwidth. Some of them are proprietary
    based.
  • An Internet TV provider has no control over the
final delivery. This uncontrol over delivery do
not give guarantee of quality of service.
  • So, the service provider is not able to offer an
enhanced user experience such as better program
    guide, interactive services etc.
  • It is very difficult to provide video on demand,
    recording services etc.

6
IP TV
IPTV uses a private, managed network rather than
using existing internet. The video are
transferred over a proprietary network. The term
IP means that it uses Internet Protocols for
connecting all devices. This is provided by
large telecom providers like Microsoft, AT T
etc. The model look like this

IP TV
From the diagram it is quite clear that IPTV uses
a private network to provide the videos using
Internet Protocols technology. It provides both
live TV as well Video On Demand. It uses
multicasting address scheme to provide the live
TV content and unicast address scheme for Video
On Demand. When user switches the channels
while watching live TV, the setup box switches
the multicast group to suitable group. During
watching Video On Demand, the user is directly
connected to the server using the unicast
address. Live TV is using IGMP version 2 for
connecting to a multicast stream (TV channel) and
for changing from one multicast stream to another
(TV channel change). VOD is using the Real Time
Streaming Protocol (RTSP). Video content is
typically compressed using either a MPEG-2 or a
MPEG-4 codec and then sent in an MPEG transport
stream. The newly released (MPEG-4) H.264 codec
is increasingly used to replace the older MPEG-2
codec.
9
IP TV
The IPTV provider that owns the network directly
controls the "Final Mile" to the consumer's
premises. This control over delivery enables a
guaranteed quality of service, and also allows
the service provider to offer an enhanced user
experience such as better program guide,
interactive services. This make easy for
provider to offer services like video on demand,
network storage, interactive guide etc.
10
IP TV
  • The Major Barriers of the IPTV are
  • Bandwidth limitations Low bandwidth can result
    in poor quality.
  • The IPTV is sensitive to packet loss.
  • The picture can broken due to unreliable stream
    data.
  • The major drawback is cost of implementation.
Since to create a private network infrastructure
to provide high quality of service, it requires
large amount of money, qualified professional and
    man power.

11
P2P TV
As the name suggest, this technology uses peer to
peer technology to offer TV content. The normal
P2P technology allows users to connect to
directly each other and they can share their
music, file etc. Using the same, P2PTV allow
users to view the video which are not stored on
the actual server but to its nearest
neighbors. P2PTV allows to redistribute video
streams on a p2p network, typically TV stations
across the world. The model look like this
12
P2P TV
Server
Video Sources
Internet
13
P2P TV
In P2P each client (or server) is called as node.
Here the server captures the video sources and
distribute to its closest node. This node again
redistribute this video stream to its closest
node. Thus each nodes in the network gets the
video stream. The P2PTV technology uses existing
internet network for connectivity. Each node,
while downloading, is also uploading, thus
contributing to the overall available
bandwidth. Each node can also distribute its to
others to watch the content which is provided by
himself. This make small users or organization to
provide their own video service. The video
quality of the channels typically depends on how
many users are watching the video quality is
better if there are more users or
nodes. Similarly, downloading video is faster if
there are more users. This overcomes the
bandwidth problem faced by internet TV and it is
cost effective solution than IPTV.
14
P2P TV
  • The major disadvantages of P2PTV are
  • Quality of service Here again the provider has
no control on the last mile.
  • No reliability on the video stream.
  • Over 40 of extra data overhead.
  • No control. Broadcasters prefer to be able to
limit access to their content based on regions,
and would like good data on viewer behaviour,
such as volume, trends and viewing time.
  • P2P issues like virus, worms, hacking etc.

15
NetAlter Approach
NetAlter is not TV or Video provider. Rather it
is alternative to Internet It helps the TV or
Videos providers to offers their consumers high
quality TV videos using P2P technology but in
controlled, reliable and secure manner. The
NetAlter Model does away with the need for
Service/Content Providers to install and maintain
servers world wide and instead can use the User
PCs to transport content. This saves cost to the
Service Provider. The User need not be dependent
on Service Provider server to watch Video/Live TV
as the content is available on the nearest
computer where NetAlter Browser is installed.
This reduces last mile connectivity
issues. Being controlled by NetAlter Browser
service module, this system can provide control
and tracking of content usage by user anywhere in
the world. The model look like this

17
NetAlter Approach
NetAlter offers an alternative to internet via
the NetAlter Browser which is a free software and
which will be available for download for the
subscriber through internet. Once a users
downloads the NetAlter Browser and installs on
his computer, it asks for user registration. This
generates a unique identification key for a
particular user. After this the users is free to
use NetAlter. The active NetAlter User becomes a
node in the NetAlter Network. The NetAlter
Browser will also provide integrated, Artificial
Intelligent Search, an Active Directory Explorer,
container for deploying thin, rich and smart
client applications, eCommerce and communication
facilities such as Peer-to-Peer collaboration and
sharing, enabling of Personal Networks, GRID
Supercomputing, etc. The Brower will also permit
users to create their own social and personal
network where they can share files, documents and
data without infringement of intellectual
property.
18
NetAlter Approach
In NetAlter, the TV/Video providers will be
directly or through conglomerate become service
provider in the NetAlter System. They will
require to register as authorized Service
providers and list the services offered by
them. The Service Providers will host their
service applications on their own server which
will be connected to the NetAlter network using
the NetAlter Service Browser. After this users
has an option to download a service module that
is related to that particular TV/Video providers.
Using this module, the user can subscribe for
watching TV/Video content. During watching
TV/Video content the users as well as the
TV/Video provides both are verified. After the
verification the NetAlter system will
automatically identify the nearest source of the
content provided with the subscribed service and
will either offer for online viewing or offline
download of the content based on the
subscription. Service Providers can offer users
to host content data on their computers and
onward download/upload of same in lieu of
benefits to the user.
19
NetAlter Approach
Delivering TV/Video content through NetAlter
resolves all the drawbacks of P2PTV and other
systems. The TV/Video Provider Subscriber,
both are registered users of NetAlter system. The
providers will have all the information of the
subscribers. This makes providers to get last
mile control over his valued customer and thus
they can offer quality of services to its
customers. The providers can use concept of
NetAlter Super Nodes and NetAlter Grid computing
to provide reliable video streams. The TV/Video
is distributed through module based software,
thus there will be not much data transfer
overhead. The NetAlter system has information of
all nodes by region wise. This will help the
providers to broadcast by preferred region, time,
volume trends. The TV/Video contents are allowed
to upload and download, only after NetAlter
verifies the users, its contents etc. This
ensures virus free, piracy free and hacker free
system. Thus this is totally secure and efficient
system.

Conclusion
Television and Video has undergone sweeping
change in the last few years. From analog video
record to digital record, the distribution of
content has also diversified. With the advent of
internet, access to content become more easy as
in the case of Internet TV and P2P TV. IPTV has
made all of this a lot easy by combining elements
of the Tube with IP. But the question is are
users ready to accept technology at high cost.
And the answer to this lies in NetAlter. NetAlter
aims to bring the best of Video Delivery
Technology at the least cost to end users.
