Introducing Set
  • Contents
  • 2 x 10ml Syringe
  • Scalpel
  • needle
  • Guide wire
  • trocar and peelable sheath
  • Low profile silicone catheter (14fr )

Local Anaesthetic
  • Administer local anaesthetic approximately 2
    3cm above the symphysis pubis in the midline

Small Incision
  • make a small incision at this point

Create Track
  • inject local anaesthetic along a track from the
    skin down to the bladder perpendicular to the
    skin

Remove Syringe
  • continue to advance the needle until fluid from
    the bladder can be freely aspirated
  • remove the syringe from the needle

Insert Guide Wire
  • Insert the guidewire through the needle, floppy
    end first, up to the first black mark
  • remove the needle being careful to hold the
    guidewire in position

Insert Trocar
  • feed the trocar over the guidewire ensuring that
    it is not pushed further into the bladder
  • gently push the trocar into the bladder with a
    twisting action

Remove
  • remove the trocar and guidewire from the outer
    sheath
  • place your thumb over the end of the trocar to
    prevent excess fluid from escaping

Insert Foley Catheter
  • insert the Foley catheter down the sheath to
    approximately the mid point of the catheter
    length

Inflate catheter balloon
  • inflate the catheter balloon with 5ml of sterile
    water

Remove dilator
  • slide the sheath back along the shaft until it
    is external to the abdomen

Completely remove dilator with sheath
  • pull the sheath apart and remove it from the
    catheter.
