Introduction of Grant
  • Ulysses S. Grant was probably the best
general for the Union during the Civil War. He
had difficult beginnings, but he became one of
the most important men of his time.

3
Grants Beginnings
  • Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27, 1822,
in Point Pleasant, Ohio. He was the son of an
Ohio tanner. He went to West Point Military
School where he excelled in horsemanship. He
became part of the 4th Infantry in the Mexican
War. Soon after that he married Julia Boggs
Dent. He had four children Frederick, Ulysses,
    Ellen, and Jesse.

4
Road to the Civil War for Grant
  • During the Mexican War he was stationed if
Mexico. He tried many businesses ventures so he
could send money to his wife, but he was
unsuccessful. He resigned his post because of
rumors of drinking. Then, he tried farming which
was also a failure. Among his other jobs were
real estate agent and clerk post. He finally
became a clerk in the family leather goods store
in Galena, Illinois, thats where he was when war
    broke loose.

Grants successes failures in war
  • Grant was appointed by the governor to
command a volunteer regiment. He sought to win
control of the Mississippi Valley. In February
1862 he took Fort Henry and attacked Fort
Donelson. When he was asked for his terms, he
replied, No terms except an unconditional
immediate surrender can be accepted. Thats
where he got his nickname Unconditional Surrender
Grant. He was also promoted to major general of
    volunteers.

6
Grants successes failures continued
  • Grant, then, went to fight in Shiloh, one of the
bloodiest battles in the West where he lost.
President Lincoln was told to remove him, but he
said, I cant spare this manhe fights. Grant
moved on to win Vicksburg and this cut the
Confederacy in two. Then, he went on to win
Chattanooga. After that battle he was promoted
    to General-in-Chief.

7
Appomattox Court House
  • Finally, on April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court
House, Lee surrendered. Grant wrote out terms of
surrender that would prevent treason trials.

8
Grants Presidency
  • After the war he was ordered to replace Edwin M.
Stanton as secretary of was. He soon became a
nominee for president in 1868. He served two
terms during which he remained untainted
    throughout many scandals.

9
After the fame
  • After he didnt win a third term he went on a
two-year tour around the world, which took an
appearance of a political campaign. When he
found out about his throat cancer he started to
write a memoir. He finished the last page days
before he died. His family made profits of
almost 450,000. He died on July 23, 1885 in
    Mount McGregor, New York.

10
Conclusion
  • Ulysses S. Grant was a superior general during
the Civil War. His tactics helped us
tremendously to win the war. If it wasnt for
Grants genius military skills we might not have
    won the war.
