  • All MTP components use 6061 aluminum, and have
    received a chemical film treatment meeting
    MIL-C-5541E Class 3
  • All MTP components are mounted by using 10-32
    Floating Nut Plates meeting NAS 1068A3
  • Mounting hardware are NAS 3 or NAS 1303
    compatible, and are certified to gt160 ksi
  • Since each component box is almost entirely
    filled and their mass 10 lbs., the center of
    gravity of each component box may be considered
    to be the geometrical center of the box.

Unit (show above without cover plate) mounts to
an adapter plate by four NAS 1068A3 Locking
Floating Nut Plates (Small Pattern) using
standard NAS 3 10-32 hex bolts. The adapter plate
(not shown) in turn mounts to six fixed nut
plates using NAS 3 10-32 hardware on the mounting
bracket (shown).

MTP Components in Spear Pod Adapter Ring and
Backseat
(Top) MTP Data Unit (DU) mounted in spear pod
adapter ring (Middle) MTP WB-57 Analysis Computer
(WAC) mounted from a plate in spear pod adapter
ring. (Bottom) Old MASP Electronics box.
A NTSC video signal from the WAC is sent to the
WB-57 back seat for display. This is used by the
backseater to have the pilot fly at specific
altitude offsets with respect to the tropopause
in order to meet science objectives.

provided by Ellington. Sides are made of 1 inch
by 2 inch angle bracket aluminum which is 0.070
inches thick, also provided by Ellington.

MTP Data Unit (DU) WB-57 Installation

MTP Data Unit weighs 9.2 lbs, is made of 0.085
inch thick 6061 aluminum, and is mounted with AN3
10-32 hardware. It hangs from a Ellington
provided 0.100 inch thick aluminum plate which is
mounted to the top of a 19-inch rack in a pod
adapter ring.
