1
The 5 Pillars of Islam
  • Class 6

2
The Five Pillars
  • Muslims obey Five Pillars as an outward sign of
    their belief.
  • The Five Pillars are
  • Shahadah (statement of belief)
  • (2) Salah (prayer)
  • (3) Zakat (giving alms)
  • (4) Sawm (fasting during Ramadan)
  • (5) Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah).

3
Shahadah
  • The first of the Five Pillars.
  • Shahadah is the statement of belief,
  • 'La ilaha illal lahu muhammudur rasulul lah'.
  • (There is no God but Allah Muhammad (pbuh) is
    the messenger of Allah).

4
Salah
  • Prayer.
  • Salah at fixed times is essential for believers.
  • The Prophet prayed five times each day.
  • These prayers are compulsory for Muslims and are
part of the Five Pillars of Islam.
  • Compulsory prayers are known as fard.

5
Zakat
  • Giving alms
  • This is an obligation for Muslims.
  • The amount each Muslim pays is based on a portion
    of income generated.
  • It might range from 2.5 per cent upwards.

6
Sawm
  • Fasting during Ramadan.
  • During Ramadan (the ninth month of the Islamic
calendar) all adult Muslims must fast from dawn
to sunset every day for 28 days.
  • Fasting means they must abstain from eating,
    drinking and smoking.

7
Hajj
  • The pilgrimage to Makkah
  • Muslims are required to make the pilgrimage at
    least once in their lifetime.
  • It lasts for about a fortnight and ends with an
    Id celebration.
